Description

Made in 1963-4 for about 18 months and the precursor for the more sought after 176 and Selmer exclusive "Galaxie" models, which are a 176 without the varitone circuit. Offset double cutaway body. Lacquered neck. 4-way pickup selector (1 pickup at a time or all "on") Differentiated tone cap values for each (essentially mini-humbucker) Franz Pix 511 Nova Sonic pickup (has a tone roller above each). Available in painted or vinyl-wrapped finishes. Originally with mute. There is also a 175 from the 70s that is a 2-pickup "tele" with blade pickups. This requires a separate entry as it's not the same guitar. The Hofner official website archive refers to that model as the 175T. Vibrato is very subtle. Later models are sometimes with the "adjustable glass saddle" type bridge used on the 176. Otherwise with compensated one-piece cast bridge.

Surprisingly good

I grew up in the 80s and was told that old Hofners should be avoided as they were fragile and tinny sounding with bad action. Finally got a black/white vinyl covered 175 a couple of months ago and it sounds great, feels great and has stood the test of time for 60 years. Weak links are probably the tuners (mine has had them changed at some point) and a lot of the pickups need to be rewired by all accounts - but they sound very "hi fi" and clear when they work. Also not a lot of hum. Body is very thin and the vinyl covering and pickguard "shrink", but don't let this put you off.
