Description
Handmade in the USA as a high quality alternative to the Danelectro catalog guitars of the 1950s and '60s, Jerry Jones instruments capture the fun and unique tonal character of a vintage Danelectro, with the reliability and expert build quality required by today's professional players. Arguably one of the most iconic designs in the Danelectro family, the Shorthorn double cutaway model with the "seal" pickguard was an essential tool of artists such as Jimmy Page and Syd Barrett, and this USA-made Jerry Jones model builds on the original design with more roadworthy hardware and construction methods, as well as a middle pickup!
With a five-position blade switch and hum canceling options when multiple pickups are engaged, this Shorthorn is a particularly versatile and sweet sounding model, with the chime and hollow twang associated with the original Lipstick single coil design. There's a real roundness and warmth to these pickups too, as well as a percussive clarity that keeps the sound focused and present in all pickup positions. Weighing in at only 6lbs 12oz, the semiholllow poplar and masonite body construction makes for a surprisingly acoustically resonant and lightweight guitar. We've professionally setup this Jerry Jones here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar and strung it with fresh 10-46 strings.
The maple neck has a slender C shaped profile, with an Indian rosewood fretboard and flat 14 1/2" fretboard radius that makes this model an ideal choice for slide players. The action is low and comfortable, with original medium jumbo fretwire that retains its full, original height, with well rounded crowns. The frets show light wear beneath the plain strings on frets 1-3, and virtually no wear up the fretboard, playing cleanly in all registers with no buzzing or dead spots. The nut measures a full 1 11/16" in width and the scale length is 25", with easy access to the highest frets and a very intuitive and traditional feel. The headstock has Danelectro's iconic "coke bottle" shape, with Kluson-style tuners manufactured by Gotoh which turn very smoothly and hold pitch as they should. While the back of the headstock retains Jerry's serial number badge, the face of the headstock has been cleanly refinished with gloss black nitro lacquer and a vintage-style Danelectro logo under the clear coat. It's a best of both worlds scenario, with the serial badge confirming the Jerry Jones provenance, and a traditional looking headstock face.
