Description

The Make Noise Shared System is a sonic playground for those who demand the ultimate in modular synthesis. This Eurorack modular synthesizer is a comprehensive setup that embodies the spirit of exploration and tactile interaction. Housed in a 7U case that meets airline carry-on requirements, it’s a travel-friendly powerhouse packed with creative potential.

At the heart of this system is the René sequencer, which redefines sequencing with its Cartesian grid layout, offering a unique approach to melody and rhythm creation. The Pressure Points module adds a layer of expressiveness, allowing musicians to play sequences with their fingertips, responding to the pressure applied for dynamic sound manipulation. Also featured is the DPO Dual Analog Oscillator, celebrated for its vintage voice and complex waveform capabilities, making it ideal for live sound creation.

The Modular synth includes the Echophon Pitch Shifter/Echo, a nod to vintage sound manipulation with modern DSP capabilities, and the Maths module, an analog function generator that transforms mathematical concepts into musical functions. The Wogglebug, ModDemix, Optomix, and Phonogene modules expand the sonic palette even further, offering random voltage generation, balanced modulation, lowpass gating, and real-time sound recording and manipulation, respectively.

With 30 patch cables included, the Make Noise Shared System is ready for immediate experimentation, catering to both seasoned modular users and adventurous newcomers. Crafted with precision in Asheville, NC, this system is not just an instrument but a community of sound waiting to be discovered.

Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Make Noise Shared System.

Features and functionality

  • The Shared System doesn't include filters; users often rely on modules like the Mimeophon and Morphagene for creative sound manipulation.

    Source
  • The Telharmonic offers unique sound options not available with the STO or DPO, enhancing the audio manipulation capabilities of the Shared System.

    Source
  • The Rene sequencer in the Shared System includes built-in quantization, sample and hold, and pattern storage, offering unconventional sequencing capabilities.

    Source

User experience

  • Owners find the Make Noise Shared System highly flexible but note the lack of basic utilities like switches and tempo-synced LFOs.

    Source
  • Shared System's decentralized mixing may not suit all workflows; some users prefer more centralized setups.

    Source
  • Some owners find the stock TRS 1/4" output unsatisfactory and consider upgrading to a better output module.

    Source

Comparisons

  • The Spectraphon is preferred over the DPO for users focused on audio manipulation, especially when paired with tape and microsound modules.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • The Morphagene is highlighted as essential for those creating tracks with sampled drums and leads, offering extensive sound design possibilities.

    Source
  • The Phonogene, combined with Morphagene, allows users to sample and manipulate the same voices in various ways, offering extensive sound design flexibility.

    Source
  • The Shared System can create techno kick sounds using the DPO as a complex oscillator, but it's limited to producing one to three voices simultaneously.

    Source
  • The Erica Synths Techno System and Make Noise 0-Coast are recommended alternatives for techno, offering more genre-specific functionality.

    Source

Mods and upgrades

  • Many users replace the Pressure Points with the QPAS for improved modulation options, as they find Rene sufficient for sequencing.

    Source
  • Adding an Ochd LFO and a C4RBN VCF in the blank spaces of the Shared System enhances modulation and filtering capabilities significantly.

    Source
  • Adding a second oscillator, such as the Make Noise XPO, can enhance the Shared System's sound capabilities when space is available by removing redundant modules like Rene or Tempi.

    Source

Software and compatibility

  • Utilizing Bitwig with the Shared System requires a MIDI to CV converter or a DC-coupled sound card for seamless integration.
