Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about RED Epic.

Features and functionality

  • The RED Epic MX requires significant rigging, as noted by multiple users, to be fully functional in a professional setup.

    Source
  • The RED Epic X lacks in-camera IPP2 color science, requiring post-processing, which contrasts with DSMC2's in-camera capabilities.

    Source
  • The floating ISO on RED Epic cameras allows dynamic range adjustment based on lighting conditions, differing from traditional fixed ISO systems.

    Source
  • Owners recommend the official 5" touch monitor for DSMC1 for intuitive control, despite the potential use of a DSMC2 monitor with adapters.

    Source
  • The Epic Dragon 6K is praised for its filmic look, particularly due to the older Dragon sensor, which some users prefer over newer DSMC3 cameras.

    Source

Comparisons

  • The Blackmagic URSA Broadcast G2 offers built-in rigging and comparable image quality to BMPCC 6K/6K Pro, providing more convenience than the RED Epic MX.

    Source

Value and pricing

  • For $5,000, the storage capacity with 5x64GB Red Mags on the Epic MX is limited compared to modern alternatives like a $90 Samsung 500GB SSD.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • The Epic MX produces large raw file sizes, which can be cumbersome for users who are already frustrated with large files from cameras like the C200.

    Source
  • A RED camera might be more suited for high-end or high-budget projects where clients value professional appearance and superior image quality.

    Source
  • The Dragon 6K is favored for underwater shooting and is utilized by industry professionals for shows like Deadly Catch.

    Source

User experience

  • Owners express dissatisfaction with the small memory card size of the RED Epic MX, which can be a limitation during extended shoots.

    Source
  • The DSMC1 Dragon is noted for its higher quality compared to the Raven, though repair and support may be challenging for DSMC1 systems.

    Source

Mods and upgrades

  • Using third-party SSDs is a potential cost-saving strategy, but users should research compatibility and reliability thoroughly.

    Source

Setup and maintenance

  • The DSMC1 system requires either a side handle or a sidekick module for settings adjustment, as the brain alone lacks interface buttons.

    Source
  • Owning a DSMC1 Dragon requires significant investment in support equipment like tripods with 100mm bowls, high-capacity batteries, and storage solutions due to large file sizes.

    Source

Software and compatibility

  • For optimal image quality, users recommend using DragonColor2 and RedGamma4 for the Dragon sensor, with post-processing in IPP2 using DaVinci Resolve.

In the description, you can read all the technical details of the video posted by Deadmau5:

"man, i really hate the compression on this. anyway, before all the questions: shot in 5k @ 96fps with a RED Epic, zeiss 50mm prime / Canon 70-200 and literally destroyed to all shit by crappy WMV compression to "1080p" because it kept crashing whilst i was trying to render a mildly compressed QT format. oh you, technology, youre so shitty sometimes."
