Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Universal Audio OX.

Features and functionality

  • The OX Box excels in providing a range of great-sounding microphone and room simulations, ideal for recording without needing extensive pedal setups.

    Source
  • Owners appreciate the headphone functionality for silent practice, allowing them to use their amp heads without disturbing others, but cab emulation is necessary for headphone use.

    Source
  • The OX Box offers five set attenuation levels, which some users find limiting, wishing for a more continuous adjustment option.

    Source
  • The OX's impedance curve is less realistic, possibly to integrate better with built-in IRs, affecting power amp interaction.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • It's particularly effective for cranked non-master volume amps, offering studio-quality tones without requiring an isolation booth.

    Source
  • For those wanting to record amps quietly, the OX Box is a standout choice but may be overkill for simple volume reduction needs.

    Source
  • Users highlight the OX Box's effectiveness in live settings, sending amp tones directly to Front of House, while maintaining manageable stage volume.

    Source
  • Users recommend using a U67/121 mic combo with the OX to mimic mic'd cab sounds for specific amp/cab configurations.

    Source

Comparisons

  • Users note that while the Two Notes Torpedo offers flexibility, the OX Box simplifies the process with consistently great tones, reducing time spent tweaking.

    Source
  • Compared to the Boss Waza Tube Amp Expander, the OX Box doesn't re-amplify the signal, which some believe results in a thicker tone with the Waza.

    Source
  • Compared to the Two Notes Captor X, the OX is preferred by some users for its lack of fan noise, especially noticeable when using high-wattage amps.

    Source
  • The Suhr Reactive Load offers a cost-effective alternative to the OX, allowing 96k recording unlike the OX's 48k limitation.

    Source

Software and compatibility

  • Recording in stereo using S/PDIF at 44.1kHz is recommended for optimal sound, as improper settings can result in undesirable audio quality.

    Source
  • Users report a seamless experience with the OX Box app, with no connectivity issues, allowing easy customization of virtual cabinets and effects.

    Source

User experience

  • Some users experience digital distortion with high gain settings, indicating potential issues with the OX Box when using such setups.

    Source

Value and pricing

  • The cost difference between the OX and alternatives like the Captor X is attributed to additional features rather than core performance.

Critic Reviews

Universal Audio OX

soundonsound.com

Universal Audio's OX Amp Top Box is a game-changer for guitarists seeking authentic tube amp sounds without ear-splitting volumes. It combines an attenuator and speaker emulator in one, offering stellar sound quality through its dynamic speaker emulation technology. The design is robust and fanless, with intuitive controls and a stylish retro look. UA's expertise in digital modelling shines, delivering near-zero latency and a convincing all-in-one solution. However, the app is exclusive to Apple devices, potentially excluding some users. Despite minor limitations in attenuation increments, OX's versatility and sound fidelity make it a standout choice.

Universal Audio: OX Amp Top Box | Tape Op Magazine | Longform candid interviews with music producers and audio engineers covering mixing, mastering, recording and music production.

tapeop.com

The Universal Audio OX Amp Top Box impresses with its blend of analog charm and digital versatility, making it a must-have for studio guitarists seeking efficient workflow and immaculate tone. Its seamless integration of hardware and app allows for easy customization, preserving the tube amp's character while offering dynamic speaker modeling. The OX's ability to save presets and manage RIGs streamlines recording, and its low-latency performance ensures clarity without hum. However, the app's limited bass cabinet options and lack of individual mic model outputs might be a downside for some. Despite these minor shortcomings, the OX's re-amping capabilities and overall impact on sound production solidify its status as a brilliant recording solution.

OX Me Again: Revisiting Universal Audio’s Amp Top Box - Premier Guitar

premierguitar.com

The Universal Audio OX Amp Top Box delivers exceptional speaker emulations and effects, making it a standout for low-volume recording. Its intuitive operation and diverse speaker models, including legendary brands like Fender and Marshall, are praised for their realism and versatility. However, limitations exist with its proprietary speaker emulation process, preventing additional IR uploads, which could be a dealbreaker for tone purists. The software editor, while powerful, can be cumbersome due to network connectivity issues. Despite minor inconveniences, the OX remains a top-tier choice for those seeking uncompromised tone quality in a studio setting.

Universal Audio OX Amp Top Box review | MusicRadar

musicradar.com

The Universal Audio OX Amp Top Box is a high-end tool designed for pro musicians, offering stellar sound quality that rivals top studios and a robust build suitable for stage use. It features a sophisticated reactive load circuit for preserving amp dynamics, along with digital cabinet and mic emulations. However, its reliance on an app exclusive to modern iPads and Macs limits accessibility. The absence of a rackmount option also makes it less ideal for live stage setups. Despite these drawbacks, its features could replace significant parts of a player's gear, making it a potentially game-changing product.

Universal Audio OX Amp Top Box Review - The Guitar Magazine

guitar.com

Universal Audio's OX Amp Top Box is a game-changer for guitarists seeking powerful recording and live performance solutions. Blending reactive attenuation with sophisticated speaker, cabinet, microphone, and effects modeling, it offers impressive tonal authenticity and flexibility. The intuitive interface and robust construction add to its appeal. However, its reliance on wifi for full functionality, fixed sample rate, and currently unutilized footswitch port may deter some purists. Despite these minor drawbacks, the OX stands out as a groundbreaking tool that rivals traditional mic’d setups in convenience and sound quality, making it a worthwhile investment for many musicians.

amazing!!!

This is one of the most amazing processors I've ever played! It really cures a lot of my problems: - It has a great powerbreak function (limited, but works very well) - It has a great recording function - It has a great silent playing function (for when the kids are sleeping)

I've tried this against a lot of the other competitors in the market (as it is quite expensive), and as the other ones do produce similar products, one thing stands out: TONE! Really, this unit can get you a tone I couldn't get from any other unit. I can only describe it as being next to your amp without being next to your amp. It is really amazing.

I compared it to the Boss, the Torpedo, the Suhr, the Nux, the Strymon....... and these were no match for the Ox (and yes, I tried it in my own room with a lot of time to go in depth to the units). And although these units could come close, they never matched the feeling of the signal, the airy-ness of the signal and the lack of noise.

I enjoy using it with my vintage amps as it really makes the character of the amp stand out.

OK, one downside: when I tried to record some of my sounds I got a big dissapointment. The recorded sound (through my Focusrite with cables OR SPDIF) didn't sound anythink like the headphone output of the unit. I got mad finding a solution, and in the end I ended up buying a Universal Audio Volt 476 instead :) (btw, the trick is to pan both signals (line out 1 and 2) to hard left and hard right to get a similar signal)

Preferred Settings + Usage:

I really enjoyed preset 2 and 6 from the factory standards

It can give similar sounds compared to the Ox, but the noise level is a tad higher and the models sound less impressive. Only with a lot of tweaking I got close to the Ox (so it is possible) but I still missed the 'airy-ness' of the sound
