Cherry Audio Ensoniq ESQ-1 review: a hybrid Lo-Fi synth rebirth for your DAW - SYNTH ANATOMY

synthanatomy.com

A loving, modernized revival of a cult hybrid synth: Cherry Audio nails the ESQ-1’s gritty, sizzling lo-fi character, wraps it in a far friendlier interface, and sweetens the deal with dual layers, strong modulation, motion sequencing, solid FX, and even SysEx import/export for hardware patches. The reviewer especially praises how inspiring and flexible it is for sound design, with presets and extras that push beyond the original without losing its identity. The caveat: authenticity can’t be fully verified because the reviewer didn’t have hardware on hand, and a few workflow annoyances linger. Output levels run hot, presets can vary too much in volume, and FX modulation is still frustratingly limited to one fixed parameter. Still, those are framed as minor compromises rather than dealbreakers.
