A loving, largely glowing take on Waldorf’s Microwave 1 plugin: it nails the original’s icy, gritty wavetable character so convincingly the reviewer says it feels like time travel, with careful modeling of the hardware’s converters, noise, and high internal sample rate. Better yet, it fixes one of the old unit’s biggest headaches with a far friendlier GUI, easier multimode handling, wavetable editing, hardware control, and import of legacy MIDI/SysEx patches. The knocks are real but minor for this reviewer: the browser could be clearer, and there’s no favorites system, random patch generator, arpeggiator, or onboard effects yet. Still, the verdict is emphatic—an “80%” first release that sounds breathtaking and stands as a fantastic recreation of a cult classic.

CPU load is low, the interface is far more humane than the vintage hardware ever was, and the bonus ability to edit an actual Microwave over MIDI is a killer feature for owners. The review also praises the deep programming options, microtonality support, and generous preset library. The catches are modest but real: preset management is clunky, long bank menus get tiresome, and the strict eight-voice limit may feel stingy in multi mode. Still, the sonic differences from hardware are described as negligible in practice, making this feel less like a nostalgia exercise and more like a genuinely useful, reasonably priced revival.

A loving, highly convincing software resurrection of the 1989 wavetable classic, this Microwave 1 plugin wins on sound, character and usability. MusicRadar praises its faithful modelling of the original’s abrasive 8-bit oscillators and beautifully judged analogue-style filters, plus the inclusion of factory presets, editable/importable wavetables, strong modulation and a much friendlier interface than the hardware ever had. It’s immediate, inspiring and deep enough to reward serious experimentation, from cutting leads and basses to softer pads. The downsides are real, though: the raw waveforms can sound harsh before filtering, the resonance can get unruly fast, it’s capped at just 8-note polyphony, and there’s no standalone version. Still, the verdict is clear: quirks and limitations intact, this is an engaging, desirable classic reborn rather than a museum piece in plugin form.
