Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Yamaha THR100H.

Features and functionality

  • The amp models require the boost for higher gain, but the boost lacks a volume control, which can be problematic for volume management.

    Source
  • The solid-state clean setting is considered mediocre, though the four amp models are praised for their sound quality.

    Source
  • The FX loop is off by default at startup, requiring the footswitch to activate it every time.

    Source
  • The wattage switch can be set to 25, 50, or 100 watts, but changing it has minimal impact on volume, especially in stereo mode.

    Source
  • The footswitch provides five functions including amp switching, combining channels, a booster, reverb, and an FX loop, making it versatile for different playing scenarios.

    Source
  • The THR100HD offers dual inputs for separate amp channels, enabling versatile sound setups for individualized tones during practice or performance.

    Source
  • The tube type switches on the back significantly impact sound, offering users a range of tonal possibilities to explore and customize.

    Source

Software and compatibility

  • The USB port on the THR100 cannot be used for recording, unlike the THR10, limiting its recording functionality.

    Source
  • The software editor allows for cab impulse responses to be assigned to each amp model, providing customizable sound options.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • The THR100 is appreciated for its tube-like sound and response, making it suitable for practice and home use despite being solid-state.

    Source
  • Owners recommend using XLR outputs to a separate power amp for increased volume and stereo setups with matched cabinets.

    Source
  • The THR100HD allows two players to jam together by plugging into separate channels, offering a unique shared playing experience when paired with the Yamaha THRC212 cab.

    Source

User experience

  • Users found the clean channel lacks headroom and volume compared to distorted channels, making it unsuitable for loud band settings without a boost.

    Source
  • Owners frequently use studio monitors for home practice due to their ability to produce a rich sound, indicating the THR100HD excels in home environments.

    Source

Comparisons

  • Compared to a Deluxe Reverb, some users feel the THR100HD with the boost can achieve comparable volume, though it adds slight distortion.

    Source

Setup and maintenance

  • In stereo mode, the amp outputs 50 watts per side, not 100 watts total, which may require a separate power amp for live use.

In this interview with GuitarModerne.com, Gabrels speaks fondly of his THR100H. "As far as amps, I have started using the Yamaha THR-100, which I stumbled on using one of their little practice models as a hotel room amp and MP3 player. When I posted a picture of my guitar and the amp in a hotel room in 2016, the guys from Yamaha called and said, 'You might want to check out this THR-100H amp.'

"I used it in Nashville one night, but I had my Reeves on stage as well in case it didn’t work out. After the show, all my friends who are tone snobs and tube snobs said, 'Your Reeves amp sounded great. What was that Yamaha thing up there for?' I said, 'Well, in fact, I was using the Yamaha.' So that convinced me my ears were right."
