Aphex 661 Expressor

soundonsound.com

With the Aphex 661 Expressor, you get a versatile compressor that excels in warmth and punch, making your sound clear and upfront. Its unique Tubessence technology and easy-to-use Easyrider mode are standout features, enhancing the overall performance. However, the Expressor's high price point for a single-channel unit could deter budget-conscious musicians, especially when dual-channel alternatives exist. While it delivers impressive results, some users may find the SPR button's effectiveness inconsistent depending on the signal fed into it. Overall, it's a solid choice for those seeking quality compression and willing to invest in something special.

George Shilling reviews Aphex 661 Tube Compressor/Limiter (Expressor)

recordproduction.com

The Aphex 661 Expressor is a standout mono compressor that combines innovative tube technology with user-friendly features. Its Tubessence circuit delivers warmth while maintaining a cool operating temperature, making it a reliable choice for various audio applications. The compressor's Easyrider mode is particularly effective for transparent compression, though some may miss the character of traditional artifacts. The Spectral Phase Refractor offers an intriguing enhancement for low-end clarity, but its subtlety might not always be noticeable on individual sources. While the build quality impresses, the need for a stereo pair could be a drawback for those looking to save costs. Overall, it's a unique and well-thought-out product, perfect for both broadcasters and studios, with minor quirks that may not suit every taste.

Underrated as heck

Sounds straight up fantastic. It can be super transparent & if you go into more extreme settings, you can get some decent color. Very fun to tweak.
