When asked what type of gear he uses, Nick Simper gave this response, but it seems to be translated so it is slightly confusing:

NS: "I Have three bass guitars Fender Precision, one of them is the 1961 edition. This is the instrument on which I played the Studio recordings of DEEP PURPLE. Another bass guitar was released in the mid-1990s, and the third copy of a Fender Precision 1951, the first bass guitar of this model. This last bass released ten years ago. My amplifiers — transistor pair of Trace Elliott, just because on stage I love it loud. For many years I played on a Marshall tube amplifiers, and I have nothing against their sound, but with age I wanted a more powerful sound, and provide Trace Elliott." This implies that the bass guitar in question is a copy, replica, or reissue of a 1951 Fender Precision Bass.
