Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Audio-Technica AT-LP120 Turntable.

Build quality

  • The original LP120 had issues with a phono bypass causing interference, which were resolved in the LP120X model.

    Source

Comparisons

  • The Fluance RT82 is recommended over the LP120X for features like an MDF plinth and an optical sensor speed-controlled motor, enhancing sound quality.

    Source
  • The LP120X mimics the design of the iconic Technics SL-1200, especially appreciated by older DJs familiar with that model.

    Source
  • Reloop RP-7000 MK2 offers a stronger motor and additional features, making it a preferable choice for DJing over the LP120 for those with a budget up to $700.

    Source

Mods and upgrades

  • A Behringer PP400 ($14) or ART DJ Pre II ($65) can be added to the LP120X for improved audio performance if a separate preamp is required.

    Source
  • Swapping the stock AT95VE cartridge for an Ortofon 2m Blue significantly improves sound quality, making the LP120X competitive with higher-end models.

    Source
  • Users recommend upgrading the LP120's stock slip mat with a Dr. Suzuki mat and a butter rug for improved DJing performance.

    Source
  • Upgrading from the stock Audio-Technica cartridge to a Stanton DS4 can enhance the LP120's suitability for DJing, reducing skipping and vinyl wear.

    Source

User experience

  • Owners appreciate the LP120X for its direct drive, avoiding the need to replace belts, unlike belt-driven models.

    Source
  • Owners note that the fixed anti-skate and improved preamp in the LP120X mark significant improvements over the original LP120 model.

    Source
  • Some owners have adjusted to the LP120's lighter torque by becoming better at beatmatching due to the increased need for adjustments.

    Source

Features and functionality

  • The LP120X allows for 78 RPM playback, a feature not available on the Fluance RT85, offering versatility for those with a diverse vinyl collection.

    Source
  • The LP120's lower torque of 1.0 makes it less suitable for DJing compared to models like the Reloop RP4000 MK2 with higher torque.

    Source

Value and pricing

  • Some users express that at a price point of $300 or above, the LP120X faces stiff competition, suggesting it was a better value when priced around $200.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • The LP120 is better suited for casual home listening rather than DJing due to its lower torque and stability issues.

    Source

Other

  • The term "super OEM" refers to turntables that are clones of the Technics SL-1200, like the LP140, which are recommended over the LP120 for DJing.

The Audio Technica AT-LP120-USB Turntable Shames the Plastic Competition | Analog Planet

analogplanet.com

Audio-Technica's AT-LP120-USB turntable is a standout in its class, offering impressive build quality and features that shame its plastic competitors. While the sound is on the softer side, lacking some detail and excitement, it's a pleasant listening experience perfect for casual users or digital archiving. The turntable's design nods to the iconic Technics SL-1200, providing a blend of modern convenience with a touch of nostalgia. Despite some drawbacks like a lively plinth and soft sonics, its overall value, feature set, and ease of use make it an excellent choice for budding vinyl enthusiasts.

Audio-Technica LP120-USB review: An all-in-one turntable that digitizes your vinyl collection - CNET

cnet.com

The Audio-Technica AT-LP120-USB turntable offers an affordable and simple entry into vinyl listening, featuring a built-in preamp and USB capabilities for easy setup and digitizing records. Its direct-drive design and solid build make it a reliable choice for both casual listeners and budding DJs. While the turntable provides a good sound quality with its included cartridge, some may notice motor noise at low volumes. The main downside is the hard-wired RCA cables, which could pose issues for long-term users. Overall, it's a versatile and well-rounded option for vinyl enthusiasts looking for a budget-friendly solution.

Really great Turntable!

I definitely recommend this turntable to anybody in the market, it compares to the Technics without the high price. When you pick it up you can definitively feel how well constructed and durable it is. primarily I use this to sample but it works well for Dj's! Avoid the cheaper models that you see online and pick up something that is durable

Great alternative to the SL1200

I bought this turntable because after watching a VinylEyezz. If you don't wanna dish out the money for a SL1200 this is a perfect alternative.

xaqary

Does it's job.

Yeah, that's it. I tend to use this more than the Tech 12 for sampling vinyl just cuz of the few extra functions. No complaints.

glen_byrne

Brilliant!

If you are looking to Dj from Vinyl then this player will not let you down, it's prefect.

I price this player at 300 to 350 euro.
