Description

The Davoli Scarabeo is the creation of a brilliant and little-known artist: Antonio Pioli, also known as Wandré (1926-2004). The bizarre nickname is thought to come from what his father Roberto – an artisan and luthier – told him, throughout his childhood, when he got too close to his work: “Va’ ’ndré!”, meaning “Stand back!”.

The young Antonio listened to his father’s command at first, but in the long run went completely against the stern warning he had received: indeed, he became an artisan and a luthier too.

He created guitars in his hometown – Cavriago, in the province of Reggio Emilia – from the mid-1950s to the 1970s. In those twenty years or so, his inventions and innovations predated the evolutions that would later change guitar making in both technical aspects and design.

Partnering with companies such as Davoli and Meazzi, for instance, Wandré made close to sixty thousand guitars with aluminum necks. Between the late 1950s and early 1960s he created with Davoli the Cobra (in two variations, Cobra I and Cobra II) – an instrument whose crystal clear sound would be avidly sought-after by heavy metal musicians a few decades later.

The Scarabeo – named after its resemblance to the shape of a beetle – was another of his early-1960s’ models for Davoli. It featured a rosewood fingerboard, a particular body shape (some said it looked like a can opener), a very large headstock, and the typical Davoli humbucker pickup. It was an outstanding instrument, and one of Wandré’s most fantastic models ever.

Unfortunately, this incredible Italian artist was always better known and appreciated abroad than in his own country. We hope this will change someday. - https://www.italianways.com/wandres-scarabeo-the-guitar-that-sounds-italian/
