The DBX 386 dual channel tube mic preamp is a solid choice for both pros and project studios, blending vintage warmth with modern digital capabilities. Its standout feature, the DBX Type IV conversion system, allows for high-level signals without clipping, preserving the high-end clarity often lost in digital conversions. However, it’s not without its flaws—an inconvenient rear power switch and a lack of memory for settings when powered off can be frustrating. While the user interface is generally intuitive, its reflective faceplate can be hard to read in certain lighting. Overall, the 386 offers great sound and creative flexibility, making it a worthy addition to any studio setup despite some usability quirks.

Very decent set of pre-amps with a taste of tubes

A nice preamp with lots of gain on tap, with analogue and AES outputs. Works well as a valve front end to a lot of mics and can deliver a bit of that "warmth" at a low price. With the output level trim, it’s possible to drive the tube gain a bit harder while keeping the level within reasonable levels for most converters. It's also great as an instrument DI input. I use it with Bass guitars a lot and it can really add something nice to instruments with active pickups. Probably a slight roll off on some of the harsher transients in the very top end. My particular one has developed a bit of a power supply hum, but other than that it sounds great. (P.S. would love a power switch on the front panel!)
