Description

A hybrid chorus with complete and ultimate control over every parameter.

The Sea Machine is a chorus pedal with ultimate control over parameters rarely seen in a chorus. A hybrid of digital and analog circuitry with a slightly extended delay time allows it to really stand out and shimmer. The heart of the Sea Machine is a short digital delay line, which features controls for Animation, Dimension and Depth. The Animation allows control over the delay time, Dimension adjusts the amount of spatial regeneration and the Depth adjust the mix of the modulated wet signal against the dry analog signal. The LFO section of the Sea Machine is composed of Rate, Intensity and Shape. The Rate adjusts the speed of the oscillator, the Intensity adjusts how much the LFO modulates the delayed signal and the Shape transforms the wave from a soft triangle to a hard square wave.

Earthquaker also included a small LED which shows the speed and shape of the LFO, even in bypass. With this mix of standard and unique controls, everything from subtle warble, classic Leslie, seasick pitch bends to strangled alien sounds, stunted arpeggiations and many more far out sounds are on tap. The Sea Machine also was designed to work well following fuzz, distortion or overdrive without getting muddy, reducing volume or breaking up. When engaged, the transparent buffer leaves the all-analog dry signal unaltered and crystal clear. The Sea Machine is true bypass and made by human hands with the highest quality parts in shimmering Akron, Ohio.

Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about EarthQuaker Devices Sea Machine V2.

Features and functionality

  • The Sea Machine V2 can be both subtle and experimental, offering versatility from dry, rich tones to unique, "dimension" echo effects that work well with distortion.

    Source
  • The Sea Machine V2's delay control was noted for its narrow sweep, limiting its versatility as a chorus or vibrato pedal.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • Excellent for bass, the pedal can emulate sounds reminiscent of Tubeway Army or middle-period Wire, adding diversity to a bassist's tonal palette.

    Source

Comparisons

  • Unlike the Boss chorus pedals, the Sea Machine V2 delivers a drier sound, avoiding the typical New Wave association, and integrating seamlessly with other filter effects.

  • The Sea Machine V2 was compared to the CE-2w, MXR Analog, and Julia, but struggled in delivering a true vibrato and was deemed more of a slapback delay with modulation.

    Source
  • Owners preferred the Old Blood Noise Visitor and Caroline Somersault over the Sea Machine V2 for their chorus and vibrato capabilities, citing the Visitor's parallel modulation feature as advantageous.

    Source
  • The V1 of the Sea Machine is often cited for having significant noise issues, which have been resolved in the V2, offering a quieter performance.

    Source

User experience

  • Initial user experiences highlight satisfaction, with the pedal enhancing both clean and distorted sounds effectively, even after just a day of usage.

    Source
  • One user felt the Sea Machine V2 was difficult to dial in and didn't perform well in a lineup of various chorus pedals during a shootout.

    Source

Build quality

  • The V2 version is noted for its smaller size and updated graphics compared to the original, enhancing its visual appeal and pedalboard compatibility.

    Source

Value and pricing

  • V1 models can be purchased for approximately $100 less than V2 if the noise issue is not a concern, offering a budget-friendly option for some buyers.

An essential pedal

I’ve had my earthquaker sea machine for about 3 years and it’s easily one of my favorite pedals, in my opinion it’s the only chorus pedal you’ll ever need.

Great Chorus Pedal

This pedal can achieve great classic chorus tones along with some more wacky, sea sick tones. Very versatile pedal and built like an absolute tank. Glad to have it on my board.

Good Chorus

A good sounding chorus effect with some extras that make it perfect for a bass synth.
