Description

Walrus Audio Julianna is an all-analog, digital LFO, stereo chorus/vibrato pedal that offers an expansive sonic landscape for the music enthusiasts. Building on the legacy of its predecessor, Julia, Julianna is designed to produce everything from a mild smooth chorus to a seasick vibrato, and everything in between. Its unique features such as Secondary LFO speed, modulation drift, and tap/expression control enable you to command previously uncharted sounds, not found in traditional chorus pedals.

The pedal boasts of an exclusive feature, the Lag control, allowing you to set the center delay time that the LFO modulates. This can range from smooth and tight modulation at lower settings to a warbling detune at maximum, introducing a fresh dimension to the chorus/vibrato experience.

The DCV knob is a standout feature that sets the ratio of dry to wet signal through the mono channel, offering a unique blend of chorus and vibrato sounds not commonly found in other pedals. The stereo outputs are perfect for wet/dry/wet setups or for creating extra-wide effects in the studio.

Key Features:

  • From subtle movement to warbling stereo trembulations
  • Continuously blend between dry, chorus, and vibrato sounds
  • 100% analog circuitry
  • Analog LFO with sine, triangle, and random waveforms
  • LED provides visual feedback of LFO rate
  • Lag control determines the swing of the LFO sweep
  • Tap tempo with quarter-note, quarter-note triplets, and eighth-note divisions
  • Equipped with an expression jack for controlling rate and depth with an expression pedal
  • True bypass switching preserves your tone when the effect is switched off
  • Requires a standard center-negative 9V power supply (100mA minimum; not included)
  • Features updated artwork from original designer Adam Forster

  • "Secondary Momentary LFO Rate" for temporary "ramp-up" or "ramp-down" sounds

Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Walrus Audio Julianna.

Use cases and applications

  • The BF-2 Flanger, used by The Cure and Wild Nothing, offers classic '80s chorus tones.

    Source
  • Some users experience breakup due to slight signal gain increases from added pedals, suggesting careful chain placement and signal monitoring.

    Source
  • Some owners primarily use the Julianna for dramatic vibrato rather than subtle chorus effects.

    Source

Features and functionality

  • The Julianna benefits from a treble boost or bass cut before it to enhance sound quality, a common practice with analog choruses but especially effective for Julianna.

    Source
  • The Julianna's chorus effect can be perceived as having an underlying tremolo, which some users find excessive.

    Source
  • The Julianna's Lag knob, when turned up, increases noise due to the analog circuit's delay time limits.

    Source
  • Stereo in/out capabilities are essential for some users, a feature lacking in the Julianna but available in other models.

    Source

Setup and maintenance

  • Positioning an EQ pedal before the Julianna to cut frequencies below 400Hz can resolve low-end clipping issues common with its doubling effect.

    Source
  • Lowering hot pickups and adjusting gain/volume can prevent the Julianna from breaking up due to excessive input levels.

    Source

User experience

  • The Julianna's secondary LFO options, accessed by holding the left footswitch, are crucial for finding desired sounds.

    Source
  • Owners using dirt pedals and compression before modulation note increased noise levels with the Julianna.

    Source
  • Some users report long-term satisfaction, keeping the Julia or Julianna on their boards for several years without seeking replacements.

    Source

Comparisons

  • The Eventide Tricera-Chorus is considered for more focused '80s tones compared to the versatile Julianna.

    Source
  • The Jackson New Wave chorus/vibrato lacks a volume control and has quieter vibrato and rotary functions despite its flexibility.

    Source
  • The Boss BF-2 Flanger, with low manual and res settings, creates a lush chorus sound similar to the Boss DC-2.

    Source
  • The Paradox Futura offers unique envelope control over rate and depth, providing alternative sound manipulation to the Julianna.

    Source
  • The JAM Waterfall and BOSS CE-2W are popular alternatives considered by users seeking a different chorus character.

Walrus Audio Julianna Review - Premier Guitar

premierguitar.com

With the Walrus Audio Julianna, modulation reaches new heights. This pedal offers a wealth of textures in both vibrato and chorus, enhanced by intuitive controls that allow for precise sound shaping. Features like tap tempo and wave shape selection add to its versatility, making it an excellent choice for studio work and live performances alike. However, the tap tempo switch's proximity to the bypass switch could pose a challenge for some users. Overall, the Julianna is an impressive tool for musicians seeking to enrich their sound with nuanced modulation effects.

Walrus Audio Julianna review | Guitar World

guitarworld.com

The Walrus Audio Julianna excels with its impressive stereo operation and versatile blending capabilities between chorus and vibrato, offering a creative playground for musicians. It introduces features like tap tempo and adjustable parameters that enhance its functionality. However, the lack of onboard preset slots may hinder some users looking for quick recall options. Overall, it stands out as a solid upgrade from its predecessor, the Julia, providing an expansive range of modulation sounds that will satisfy both amateurs and professionals alike.

Review: Walrus Audio Julianna

guitar.com

Walrus Audio Julianna is a standout in the chorus/vibrato landscape, delivering rich, engaging textures and expanded functionality over its predecessor. With innovative controls like the Drift function and a blend knob for seamless transitions, it opens up a world of sonic possibilities, making it ideal for both guitarists and keyboardists. However, its complexity might be overwhelming for some players, and the price point could deter budget-conscious musicians. Still, for those seeking creative depth, the Julianna is a worthy investment, brilliantly enhancing your sound palette.

Beautiful!

H.P. Lovecraft foretold it's coming. This beast will seduce you to the depths of the deepest ocean where it will drown all of reality in circles of never ending wobblyness. Great on guitar and synth!

Shallow waters

I don't understand Julia(nna) fan club. It's only good if you never heard a good chorus tone in your life or if you need that vibrato mode (I must admit, one of the best on the market!) or stereo mode or some other additional stuff. Yes, it's tweakable, but what's the point if none of the settings are good? The tone is always flangy/phasy and thin. You can never make it sound as deep, smooth and dreamy like CE-2.

Preferred Settings + Usage:

CE-2-like mode: Rate 10, Depth 5, Lag 10, d-c-v from 8 to 12, shape triangle. Mac Demarco-like vibrato mode: Rate 9, Depth 3, Lag 9-5, d-c-v 5, shape sine

nicholas_spevak

Excellent analog vibrato chorus.

Probably one of best on the market, clear sound and highly adjustable with stereo and exp capabilities.
