Description

Set sail on a musical journey with the EarthQuaker Devices The Depths V2. This pedal is a modern take on the classic optical vibe circuit, making it perfect for guitarists who crave a lush, pulsating, three-dimensional swirling sound.

Designed to optimize use with all kinds of instruments and pickups, and to play well with dirt, the Depths V2 ensures that no one is left waiting on the shore. Whether your instrument has a 1/4" output or you're plugging in a bass guitar, this pedal allows you to dive deep into the world of unique sounds.

The Depths V2 features controls for "Voice" and "Throb" that set it apart from other vibe pedals. The "Voice" control allows you to tailor the midrange focus of the Depths to your specific instrument, providing either a fuller sound with a low-end focus or a thinner, spikier sound with a forward upper-midrange bite. The "Throb" knob adds a hefty subharmonic low-end pulse to the vibrato signal, making it especially useful on synthesizers and the bass guitar.

With the "Intensity" and "Rate" controls, you can achieve anything from a smooth ultra-slow warble to sharp, speedy bursts. The "Level" control provides ample output above unity to compensate for the perceived volume loss of most vibe pedals, ensuring your tone is always above water.

Key Features:

Versatile Vibe Pedal with a Modern Twist

When it comes to vibe pedals, EarthQuaker Devices has a solid reputation, and The Depths V2 certainly lives up to the hype. In our tests, we found it to be a compelling addition to any pedalboard.

First impressions were overwhelmingly positive. The Depths V2 exudes a rock-solid build quality, thanks to its robust metal construction. It's hand-made, and you can feel the craftsmanship right out of the box. The pedal’s switch is quiet, another testament to its thoughtful design, which gives it a reliable feel — ideal for live gigs.

Diving into the controls, The Depths V2 is highly tweakable. With knobs for throb, voice, intensity, level, and rate, we thought it covered a lot of ground. The voice knob, in particular, stands out. It allows for shaping the sound from warm, vintage mid-tones to more modern, high-end vibes. However, if you're looking for a chorus/vibrato switch, you won't find it here, and it also lacks a traditional tone knob, which can limit high-end control.

The sound quality is where The Depths V2 really shines. It offers a wide range of tones, from subtle modulation to extreme, warbly effects. We found it stacks beautifully with gain stages and other effects like reverb, delay, and distortion. The lush, psychedelic swirls it produces are captivating, and the pedal proves suitable for both live and studio settings. On the downside, some users may find it alters the EQ balance too much, particularly with a notable treble boost. It also might not meet every purist's "mojo" standards.

Bottom line, The Depths V2 offers great value for its versatility and quality. It’s perfect for modern musicians seeking a broad palette of vibe sounds. However, if you're a traditionalist looking for that classic vibe mojo, this might not be your first pick.

Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about EarthQuaker Devices The Depths V2.

Features and functionality

  • V2 includes a "flexi switch silent relay" for momentary switching, making it more versatile for different playing environments.

    Source
  • The pedal is less transparent, significantly altering the guitar's tone, making it very noticeable when engaged.

    Source
  • The "voice" knob acts like a chorus/vibe blend control, with specific settings allowing for classic univibe sounds around 3 o'clock.

    Source

Build quality

  • V2 features a softer switch and a metal washer under the switch, enhancing durability and ease of use compared to V1.

    Source

Comparisons

  • V1 vs V2 knob layout: V1 has "Voice" on the upper right, while V2 has "Rate" in the same position, aiding in quick identification.

    Source
  • The Depths is often compared to the EHX Small Clone for achieving a watery sound, with the latter being noted for its Nirvana-like tone.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • Users find positioning The Depths after fuzz but before other dirt pedals enhances its effect, offering a sweet spot for modulation.

    Source
  • The pedal is noted for creating a rotating speaker sound reminiscent of Jimi Hendrix, adding depth to clean tones.

    Source
  • The Depths is said to sound best with edge-of-breakup tones or clean channels, as heavy distortion can overpower its effect.

    Source
  • The Depths pairs well with overdrive and compressors for a boosted effect and excels when used with a Wah pedal for ambient chords.

    Source
  • Best suited for studio use or with synths, as it can become shrill and lose clarity at higher band volumes.

    Source

User experience

  • Owners find V1's switch too stiff for home use, suggesting V2 as a better choice for quieter settings.

    Source
  • Owners have found that higher serial numbers may sound different due to component changes, suggesting testing specific units before purchasing.

    Source
  • A particularly bright LED can be distracting, with some owners opting to cover it with tape to reduce glare.

    Source
  • Owners appreciate the variety of vibe sounds achievable by subtly tweaking knobs, often finding new, preferred settings with each use.

    Source

Setup and maintenance

  • Users find that running The Depths at 12V offers the best balance, as 9V is too filtery and 18V loses warmth.

Submerge Yourself in Excellence

I've always struggled with Univibes. Hendrix, Gilmour and Trower all make 'em sound incredible, but I've never been able to get them to sound anything other than thin, brittle and lifeless, no matter the rig that surrounds the pedal.

That all changed with the depths.

A little tweaking with the voice knob, and I can get it to sit perfectly with any pickup, any dirt pedal, any amp. And WHAT A SOUND from this little piece of perfection. It does the classic uni-vibe sound, and then goes above (and below) that, everything from a slow, undulating undertow to stuttery, almost harmonic-tremolo-like effects. The Throb control is your secret to taking it from subtle to extreme.

Haven't found a sound on it yet that doesn't have its use yet. It's incredible.

Nice review. I’m considering one, how do you feel about it a couple yrs later?

nbaker1251

Stellar!

It can go from subtle modulation to overall wonky, warbly tones. Sounds so perfect it's ridiculous. Plays for well with delay, reverb, and other modulation pedals as well as gain based effects. Using a compressor with it makes it beautiful and bright

andre_scott

Works with more than just the neck pickup of a Strat

Very cool effect. I love this pedal! Finally a Univibe sound that can be used with different guitars, including humbuckers.

jimmarchi1

I will have to try it.... always looking for a good univibe with a small footprint
