Critic Reviews

Elektron Digitone

soundonsound.com

The Elektron Digitone is a refreshing take on FM synthesis, blending a four-part FM engine with an intuitive sequencer. While its eight synth voices might be limiting for some, the Digitone excels in sound manipulation and sequencing, offering two filter stages per voice and robust MIDI integration. Its user-friendly interface simplifies FM synthesis without sacrificing depth, making it a joy to use. However, the lack of an instant pattern take-over mode is a minor drawback. Overall, the Digitone delivers dynamic and inspiring soundscapes, solidifying its appeal to both seasoned synth enthusiasts and newcomers alike.

Elektron Digitone review | MusicRadar

musicradar.com

The Elektron Digitone is a highly praised FM synthesizer that combines a robust build with an intuitive interface. It's hailed for its seamless integration between the sequencer and sound engine, delivering a clear and full sound quality. The unit's ability to process external gear and its portability are standout features. However, for those new to Elektron's system, the sequencer and file management can be challenging. Despite these minor hurdles, the lack of individual outputs and the inability to save pattern chains upon power down, the Digitone impresses with its extensive sound-shaping capabilities, making FM synthesis both accessible and enjoyable.

Great spin on FM synthesis

As with the Digitakt it is useless to point out what Digitone can't do. These devices have carefully selected features that spark creativity unlike anything else I've come across.

The Digitone is not simply a Digitakt with an FM synth instead of a sampler. The sequencer has other ways of adding notes to trigs that make it much easier to work with melodies and chords than on Digitakt. There are also different keyboard modes with scales and chords and there is a very powerful arpeggiator.

So sequencing a polyphonic synth is definitely easier from the Digitone, but it might make more sense to sequence a drummachine from the Digitakt.

You have to keep in mind however that Digitone has only 4 synth tracks and 4 midi tracks. They can however handle up to 8 notes per trig, whereas on the Digitakt you only have 4 notes per trig and only on the midi tracks.

So, if you want to make beats or want to drive a lot of other midi-hardware the Digitakt is probably a better choice, but if you want to add more melodic and chord stuff, then the Digitone seems more suited.

Amazing, with minor caveats

I needed some FM in my set up and also was looking at drum machines. Originally snagged a Model:Cycles and was so impressed by it that I upgraded to the Digitone right away. The sonic range of this thing is quite out there, the sound quality is outstanding and beautiful and they do a decent job of making all the FM stuff relatively comprehensible. I like the features of the Elektron sequencer, but I'm not 100% sold on the whole workflow - Model:Cycles definitely felt a little more immediate, but it also felt more like swatting around blindly in the dark and hoping to stumble into something great without having any clue what you're actually doing, so it's nice to have more clarity with the Digi's screen. I'm not blown away by the effects, but it's nice to have them, and the subtractive filter is handy as well. I love having the 4 MIDI channels and being able to use parameter locks and LFOs and stuff on them. It's quite a box.

pkennethk

Great write up. I'm so tempted to snag one of these; the sound demos I've heard have impressed.

freezeetch

I have a Roland TR-6S on the way because I'm hoping the more traditional drum synth stuff on it will compliment this nicely. Though part of me is wondering if I will end up selling both and getting a TR-8S, as Roland gave it an amazing firmware update with an FM engine - maybe not as robust as the Digitone's but maybe a better balance of depth and user-friendliness than either the M:C or the Digi. TR-6S should give me a taste, so we'll see if I'll be better off with the Digi + TR-6S combo.

pkennethk

I don't own one, but I'm big on the TR-8S. It's exactly what I wanted Roland to offer in the late 90s, instead of all that MC-Groove stuff.

Powerful and Dynamic

Like all Elektron products, the learning curve on the work flow is quite steep. Even more so when you make such a compact machine with such high functionality. Input buttons have two and often three functions each making it a little overwhelming for new users. However, once you learn to exist in the digitakt environment, you’re only limited by your imagination. Sound engines and polyphony are extremely robust with high quality filters and powerful LFOs. Virtually every parameter and automation is controllable. This is a one stop shop for desktop synthesis (within the realm of digital synthesis).

c4mr0n

Yes, I'm really struggling with this thing. But I can see the potential it has.
