    Source

Setup and maintenance

  • A preamp is needed to use microphones or instruments with the Octatrack for live looping or sampling, as it primarily supports line-level inputs.

    Source

Software and compatibility

  • The Octatrack's audio quality can be affected by default track settings and general gain staging; proper setup is crucial for optimal performance.

Critic Reviews

Elektron Octatrack MkII review | MusicRadar

musicradar.com

The Elektron Octatrack MKII remains a powerhouse in the sampling world, with its robust creative features and live performance capabilities. The MKII's updates, including new buttons and a brighter screen, enhance usability without reinventing the wheel. While it lacks DAW integration and Overbridge support, its deep sequencer and versatile audio manipulation keep it ahead in creativity. Existing users may not find enough reason to upgrade, but new users will find a lot to love. It's a complex tool with a steep learning curve, yet the investment is worth the rewarding sonic possibilities.

Elektron MkII Analog Four, Analog Rytm & Octatrack

soundonsound.com

The Elektron Octatrack MKII continues to shine as a powerhouse for sampling and sequencing, with notable improvements in design and usability. The new buttons, encoders, and screen elevate its tactile experience, while the consistent OS across generations ensures continued updates. However, its lack of Overbridge support and limited I/O enhancements might disappoint some users. Despite these drawbacks, the Octatrack remains a unique and inspirational tool, ideal for live performance and complex sound design. If you're seeking a versatile performance sampler with deep capabilities, this is still a top contender.

Elektron's Octatrack MKII is a powerhouse for electronic musicians, offering significant hardware improvements and a more intuitive interface over its predecessor. The revamped button layout and high-contrast OLED screen make navigation and live performances smoother, while the balanced audio inputs enhance connectivity. Software updates keep both MKI and MKII in sync, making the older model still relevant. However, the lack of Overbridge support may disappoint those seeking seamless computer integration. Overall, the MKII's enhancements make it a worthy upgrade for dedicated users, though newcomers will still face a steep learning curve.

Amazing Machine

Absolutely love this thing. The New update made it even better!

This is the brain of my DAW-less rig and I don't know if I could ever go back... that being said, it has its limitations (Monophonic tracks, some function automation only happens by switching parts, could have more MIDI ports or CV, etc.) but if you pair it with the right gear, you can do countless things. Great with the Monologue's Microtuning function. I run the Cue output through effects pedals, including a synced EHX looper and alternate between tracks on the Octa and freeform loops with just the pedals.

Top 3 Sampler

In my opinion it’s the perfect Sampler/Midi Controller for my personal needs. With the Octatrack You can do basically whatever you want in terms of sound creating an forming. Via midi you can upgrade every old synth that has a good midi implementation with one of the best sequencers (Elektron) on the planet. It’s one of my top 5 machines.

Preferred Settings + Usage:

The Scenes Mode is crazy and the Parts are helpful as well.

Complex but worth the effort

A very deep box with a lot of limitations, but for something that’s been around this long and still be relevant says a lot for the depth of this piece of hardware.

pkennethk

but why is it worth it?

dreamshala

For me it's worth it because it can generate ideas super fast. It can also play full stems so you can play your live set easily. It's also a capable looper, not to mention midi sequencer, sound mangler, effects box, etc...

pkennethk

that explains why this thing is so popular as a live performance hub. thank you for the reply!

monotonne_band

Outstanding

A phenomenal machine that creates its own rules. I like the way it has a bit of a lo-fi sound. At the moment, it is my favorite instrument.

alexforta

Steep, steep learning curve ( otherwise 5 stars )

But once you get there it's a beautiful piece of kit. From what I read if you can work with the OT you will have no issues with other Elektron gear. If you already own a piece of Elektron kit it should be familiar and more easy to ramp up.

Stimming is using two octatrack mk2s in this performance. He described a desire to get rid of ableton and his APC40 in a 2015 interview with djtechtools, and it appears he's done it - no laptop here!

Octatrack to artist's right is only connected on main outs, running into the inputs on the octatrack to artist's left. The SE-02 runs into the other set of inputs on the left octatrack, so that octatrack is also acting as the mixer. Stimming comments in the youtube comments, "The octa also works as a mixer. 2stereo Inputs - either through the whole engine incl fx or just to the Output on top of those other tracks. You can easily sample those Inputs anytime."

In the end of the set, he describes the octatrack on his left as "the mothership playing the tracks without groove" and the octatrack on his right as "a groove sampler" and the SE-02 as "add on stuff"

Stimming mentions that he uses 25 banks for the grooves in the grove sampler octatrack, and in the master "mothership" octatrack he only uses bank 1, pattern 1, and goes through the list of tracks. He says he will explain in detail how the setup works in another interview later this year with djtechtools.
