Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Elektron Model:Samples.

Use cases and applications

  • The Model:Samples serves effectively as a central sequencer for Volcas and monophonic synths, even after upgrading to other Elektron machines.

    Source
  • Users find the chromatic mode with single cycle waveforms more effective for melodic lines than drum patterns, enhancing versatility.

    Source

Software and compatibility

  • Recording the Model:Samples into a DAW typically involves using an audio interface like a Focusrite 2i2, as MIDI ports transmit only MIDI data, not audio.

    Source
  • Using Ableton to trigger patterns and clips allows the Model:Samples to function within a larger arrangement, compensating for the lack of a song mode.

    Source

User experience

  • Some owners find that vintage drum machine samples require additional processing, like compression and reverb, to achieve desired sound quality.

    Source
  • Owners find the Model:Samples more portable than Digi boxes, making it convenient for on-the-go music creation.

    Source
  • The Model:Samples LFO, though basic, is unique among similar devices like the Korg Drumlogue and Polyend Play, offering additional modulation possibilities.

    Source

Setup and maintenance

  • Early 2019 models may have pad issues, but Elektron provides replacement parts or repair options for affected units.

    Source

Features and functionality

  • The Model:Samples allows for 99 projects with each project containing 6x16 patterns, offering extensive space for creative experimentation.

    Source
  • The sequencer allows for parameter locking with a scale of 1-120, aligning with conventional wavetable lengths, enhancing sound design flexibility.

    Source
  • Without direct sampling capability, sounds must be loaded via computer, distinguishing it as a sample player rather than a full sampler.

    Source

Build quality

  • The Model:Samples is considered durable with a deck saver and Elektron case, enhancing portability and protection.

    Source
  • While the Model:Samples has a somewhat low build quality compared to other Elektron boxes, this is considered reasonable for its price point.

    Source

Value and pricing

  • Some users buy the Model:Samples as an entry point, then sell it with minimal loss when upgrading to a Digitakt.

    Source
  • Used units can be found for $200-$250, though new ones typically retail for around $300, offering a budget-friendly entry into Elektron gear.

    Source

Comparisons

  • The Digitakt's additional MIDI tracks are beneficial if integrating multiple devices, a feature missing in the Model:Samples.

    Source
  • The Model:Samples is praised for its immediacy compared to more complex Elektron models, making it ideal for rapid idea generation and sketching.

Critic Reviews

Review: can Elektron's Model:Samples get everyone into hardware? - CDM Create Digital Music

cdm.link

While the Elektron Model:Samples offers a fresh take on grooveboxes with its user-friendly interface and stellar sound quality, it falls short in essential areas like sample manipulation and ease of use. The limited control options and complex file system can frustrate both newcomers and seasoned users alike. Its lack of features compared to higher-end models like Digitakt makes one question its value. Despite its engaging sequencer and immediate music-making capabilities, the Model:Samples may leave you wanting more depth and consistency in your creative workflow. If you're seeking an entry-level option, consider other competitors that provide better functionality for a similar price.

negative

Elektron Model:Samples review | MusicRadar

musicradar.com

The Elektron Model:Samples offers an immediate and affordable entry into sampling, boasting intuitive sequencing and a compact design. Its user-friendly controls make sound shaping enjoyable, though it lacks advanced features like direct sampling and complex envelope shaping. The learning curve is manageable, but the overly complex memory and browser can frustrate users. While it competes well with similar offerings, it might not stand out enough against Elektron’s own Digitakt, making it a solid choice for beginners but potentially limiting for seasoned users. Overall, it’s a capable device that offers a good balance of accessibility and depth, but it may leave some advanced users wanting more.

Review: Elektron Model:Samples

musictech.com

While the Elektron Model:Samples is a delightful entry into the world of hardware sequencing and sampling, it presents a paradox for seasoned Elektron users due to its stripped-down features. With a fun and portable design, it excels in sequencing capabilities and offers a compelling way to engage with music creation. However, its limitations in sample editing and subpar pad responsiveness may deter more experienced musicians. For newcomers, this could be the perfect gateway into the Elektron ecosystem, but it might leave veterans wanting more. Overall, it’s a fun machine that balances simplicity with powerful sequencing, but the lack of depth in features might disappoint some.

grooooove to death

super funnn to play on and is pretty easy since you learn how to use the commands. Much easier than digitakt. Looks well built and reliable. I love the design and the built in sounds are great. Although white colour choise might look good but not after a few months of using it with oily fingers haha . This peace helped to get rid of the computer and get more flexibility while playing without a drummer!

kairob

Perfect little sampler on a budget.

I really have fun using the model:samples for getting ideas out while traveling or just sitting on the couch. It's a lot of fun to play around with.

darkv01d

It really could use a filter adsr

This is a perfect groovebox, but please elektron, add a way to modulate the sample cutoff with a adsr. It would be 110% box then and a must buy!
