Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Korg Volca Sample 2.

Use cases and applications

  • An effective strategy is dedicating the Volca Sample 1 to drum patterns while utilizing the Sample 2 for melodic and atmospheric samples.

    Source
  • Volca Sample's design is particularly suited for quickly generating drum patterns, leveraging its straightforward interface and immediate access to controls.

    Source

Features and functionality

  • Volca Sample includes a simple reverb and 2-band EQ (marketed as "analog isolator"), offering basic but effective tonal shaping for sample playback.

    Source
  • The Volca Sample 2's tight envelopes allow for looping single-cycle waveforms, enabling creation of synth and bass patches, unlike P-6 or Circuit Rhythm.

    Source
  • The Volca Sample 2 includes file transfer over USB, a key improvement from the original version, but with a one-bar limit.

    Source

User experience

  • The Volca Sample's ease of use stems from all controls being on the panel, making it more accessible for beginners compared to the P-6's menu-driven interface.

    Source
  • Some users manually organize samples by storing frequently used ones below slot 100, reserving higher slots for less critical samples.

    Source
  • Some users find transferring samples to the Volca Sample 2 challenging, preferring a direct method from audio editing apps rather than relying on computers.

    Source

Comparisons

  • The P-6 offers more powerful features such as reverb/delay send, master FX, and resampling, but is hampered by complex menu navigation compared to the more intuitive Volca Sample.

    Source
  • The Sample 2 is seen as superior to the original Sample 1 in its stock form, despite lacking Pajen firmware compatibility.

    Source

Software and compatibility

  • Audiopocket on older iPhones facilitates field-recorded sample transfer, though samples beyond slot 100 are generally not used for daily operations.

    Source
  • Ensuring no audio enhancements are active on the computer's headphone jack improves sample transfer quality with Vosyr.

    Source
  • Vosyr offers notable speed advantages for transfers over Korg's official Librarian software, though some prefer the latter for its ease of use.

    Source
  • The Pajen firmware, popular for the original Volca Sample, does not work with the Volca Sample 2.

    Source
  • The Volca Sample 2 may not be recognized by its librarian software unless it's within the first 10 MIDI device slots on Windows.

    Source

Mods and upgrades

  • Pajen firmware on the Volca Sample 1 enables polyphonic sample playback, allowing for chord progressions when paired with a MIDI keyboard.

    Source
  • Owners attempt to pitch up samples by 1 or 2 octaves and then adjust speed to save space, though it results in a more lofi sound.

Critic Reviews

Korg Volca Sample 2

soundonsound.com

Korg's Volca Sample 2 enhances its predecessor with greater memory, a slick USB port for seamless sample management, and an engaging new pattern chaining feature. It's a lively and fun sample production machine that excels at delivering urban and lo-fi sounds. However, the absence of a traditional sampling function and the removal of Song Mode may leave some users wanting more flexibility. While it retains the compact, sometimes fiddly design, the overall experience is notably improved. If you're ready to embrace its quirks, this little powerhouse could be your next creative partner.

Korg Volca Sample 2 review | MusicRadar

musicradar.com

Korg's Volca Sample 2 brings significant enhancements to an already popular groovebox, making it easier to use and more flexible. With a convenient USB port for direct sample uploads and doubled memory, it offers a richer sound palette. Pattern chaining is a standout feature for creative sequencing. However, the absence of a USB lead is a notable oversight. Overall, this refined version delivers a compelling upgrade for newcomers, while existing users may need to weigh the benefits carefully.

Korg Volca Sample 2 review | Juno Daily

juno.co.uk

Korg's Volca Sample 2 breathes new life into the sampler market with its intuitive design and enhanced USB connectivity, making sample loading a breeze. While it retains the gritty charm of its predecessor, its lower sampling rate might not satisfy audiophiles seeking pristine sound quality. The built-in speaker is convenient but offers lackluster audio fidelity. However, the Volca Sample 2 excels in fun factor, portability, and real-time performance capabilities. It stands out among affordable hardware samplers, providing an engaging experience for creating beats and patterns. Overall, while it may not dethrone high-end options, it remains a compelling choice for those looking to dive into hardware sampling without breaking the bank.

I love it

Amazing sampler made by korg, for the volca series this is the most easy to learn how to use, very intuitive and give you a lot of options, the only bad thing that i found is the software made by korg don't work so i don't know how to upload my samples.

Far more powerful than you might expect from a tiny volca

I bought the Sample 2 with an intention to use it primarily as a sample-based drum machine in my DAW setup with an occasional dawless lo-fi jamming in mind. But after some experimentation, it turned out to be more than just that. With simplifed sample loading, chromatic pitch scaling (hold func button and then twist the speed knob), and midi over usb, the Sample 2 can achieve more than expected. In fact, with some tricks and DAW, you can turn the Sample 2 into fully fledged monophonic synth / chromatic sampler and create full blown songs with just this Volca.

One thing that bothers me about it (this applies to the Volca Drum as well) is a lacking manual, which does not show all features. In fact, when I tried to learn how to control it, I abandoned the manual and checked youtube tutorials instead. And I wish it could play samples chromatically with a keyboard out of a box without any DAW trickery, which is the reason why I am searching for the first iteration in order to get the pajen firmware into it.

Great first Sequencer

You can take it anywhere, upload your own samples via USB, straightforward and intuitive controls. Build basic beats with intricate programmable effects. Only wish it had a midi output and a quarter inch audio input
