Description
The Elka Rhapsody is a fully polyphonic multi-orchestral synthesizer with either a 49-key or 61-key keyboard, depending on the model. It was particularly popular with Berlin School electronic musicians during the 1970s.
Raphsody 610 This is the larger instrument with a 61-key keyboard. It had four sounds, violoncello, strings, piano and clavichord which could also be switched in and out, similar to the 490. Each voice had separate volume and decay time sliders mounted on the top of the instrument. The 610 had a split function, which would allow one sound - for example, bass - to be assigned to the lower half of the keyboard, while the upper section could play a different lead voice.

"I wanted to explore these new instruments to find out what they could do. Try to make a new language for them. I’d been working at home with the synth and drum machine. Began in 1978 with an Arp Odyssey, an Elka string machine, a Roland 301 Space Echo and a Roland CR78 drum machine and a four track. "
"CM: 'Can we have a list of your gear?'
JF: 'I couldn’t possibly list all of Benge’s gear but if I work alone then sometimes I record the CR78 and then work on top of this with both analogue and digital synths and effects. I mainly use the Aryp Odyssey and the Roland Vocoder. I believe in using a limited palette of sounds - with just one or two in real focus for the track. The star sounds. This allows for consistency and some innovation at the same time. "During the process of creating patches for RE-STRINGS Rack Extension, we talked with Billy Currie about his use of String Ensemble keyboards over the years and how the Elka Rhapsody and Yamaha SS-30 contributed to some of Ultravox's classic tracks. "
Jean Michel André Jarre is seen using the Elka Rhapsody 610, a popular string synthesizer from the late '70s, in his studio during the "Equinoxe 4" clip. This information is detailed on the Jarrography website.
... This is the story of Tangerine Dream’s Ricochet.... The array of electronic equipment used by Tangerine Dream on that tour was formidable indeed. For its time it looked nothing short of a futuristic world controlled by machines. For the die hard rig fanatics, an approximate list of the machines used by the three members of the group at the Coventry Cathedral show included:
Rick Davies & Roger Hodgson used this synthesiser on Breakfast In America and on the Paris concert
