A quirky but characteristic hybrid synth simulation
This here emulates a Korg Poly-800 - notable for being one of the cheapest ways to get a keyboard with MIDI functionality back in the 80s when it was new, retailing for just under $800. However it also had a synthesizer inside, and its method of generating tones was wildly different from anything else at the time, using a very similar method to what you'd find in tonewheel organs!
It's not the most flexible type of sound for sure, but it's so characteristically synthwave that, if you're even remotely interested in making music like that, this should be in your repertoire of plugins. Best of all, though, is that it's free. Much like a lot of other popular Full Bucket synths, it's a good addition to your arsenal no matter what. Sometimes it's very fun to mix this with something else (that's usually much more expensive to own physically, too). Like, make a brass sounding patch on this, and mix it with an Oberheim brass, you've got quite the blend.
The interface is not good though, though it's still far far far better than what you'd have to deal with on the Poly-800 itself. I respect that it tries to keep that Poly-800 feel, but for a plugin it really could've just pretended it's an actual controllable synthesizer with knobs and faders and switches and whatnot, at least in my opinion. Doesn't mean you shouldn't give this a look, and once you use this for a bit you should get the hang of the interface. Still wish it went for something else, though.
All in all, check this one out.
