Critic Reviews

HELM Free VST Review — DATABROTH

databroth.com

Helm Synthesizer is a quirky, free VST that stands out for its digital, often harsh sound, and user-friendly interface. While it doesn't compete with more advanced synths like Vital, its unique oscillation and modulation capabilities make it a fun addition to any producer's toolkit. Despite its limitations in achieving an analog sound, Helm's ability to create sharp and glitchy effects, supplemented by features like a feedback system and modulateable arpeggiator, provide a creative playground for electronic musicians. Plus, being freeware, it's a valuable tool for those seeking distinctive tones without spending a dime.

Tytel: Helm — AudioTechnology

audiotechnology.com

Helm Synthesizer impresses with its open-source nature and feature-rich design, offering 32 voice polyphony, dual oscillators, and a powerful modulation system. The interactive visual interface and extensive preset library make it user-friendly, especially for sound designers and electronic musicians. However, as a free plugin, it may lack the polish and high-end features found in premium synths. While it’s a versatile tool for those on a budget, professionals might seek more robust options for complex soundscapes.

Steep Curve

But once you learn it, it's pretty powerful. You can synthesize all kinds of sounds. It's also free. But if you're using it a LOT, I suggest paying.

Again, it can get some pretty crazy sounds--from bell chimes to 808 beat dropping madness, it's all there if you play with it enough.

insert

seems powerful, but also a bit cluttered

really feels like they tried their hardest to not have any sorta tabs or hidden windows, and it sorta works, btu i find it to be a bit of an eyesore and sorta avoid it for that reason.

Great Synth Plugin

Alright, I've had Serum for a while now, and I can tell you that this is the closest free alternative that you can get your hands on. Fantastic Synth Plugin. HIGHLY suggest to new producers especially.

Something to try when you're broke

As a EDM producer just starting out, money is always tight. So the fact that the synth is free is great, it's obviously not the best, but for a free synth I am very impressed, it's a nice change from the default DAW synths as well!

nextgen

Good for 808s

I got it as a Serum-alternative cuz I didn't have $190
