Works in a pinch, should not be your "go to" direct option.
So I've owned three of these units, the MK1, II and III and while the two and three have a bit more options, it should NOT be your go to Direct solution. There are other Cab Sims/IR options that sound MUCH better, however, if you don't have access to a decent mic for your amp during a gig, a red box is a decent option. There is a harsh upper mid/boxy sound that the Red Box's have and I should note this is technology from the 90's essentially so no one should expect God tier tone or cabinet emulation coming from this thing. It's a good backup option to have in case you can't Mic your cab on stage and you can pick these guys up relatively cheap. However, if you have the money, you'd be better off investing in a Captor or Captor X, unless you have like, infinite money and you can buy an OxBox. They sound much better than the red box and the Captor X, have a lot more flexibility and options including the ability to allow you to upload your own impulse responses from the web.

Easy to Use and Sounds Great!
I've used this both ways, and it's a great unit! At home, I use this between my Micro Terror and its cabinet, rather than putting a mic in front of it, and have it in the 4x12" setting. It's a really rich tone, and a really good cabinet simulator. I'm not entirely sure how Cabinet Simulators work, but I know putting this between the amp and the board, rather than running the amp DI, is an entirely different tone.
I've used this for two shows now as a DI and Cab Simulator with a Joyo American Sound as my Amp Simulator. Unless you were looking at my pedalboard, there's no way anyone could've known I wasn't using something much fancier.
This unit is a great tool to have both on stage and in the studio, for getting the tone you want without all of the power. I definitely recommend it. Even though this review is for the MKIII, I've heard nothing but good reviews for the other Red Box products.

depends on the cab sim, older analog ones like the red box are really just a well tuned fitler network that simulates the response of a cabinet... modern ones are digital and use impulse responses of actual cabs to process the input signal.
