Humanoid Sound Systems Enzyme review | MusicRadar

musicradar.com

Humanoid Sound Systems Enzyme is a bold synth that embraces the unconventional with its unique scanned synthesis approach. It excels in modulation options and effects, offering a playground for sonic experimentation. Its intuitive interface fosters exploration, although the resulting sounds can be bewildering for some. The price makes it accessible for adventurous musicians willing to navigate its complexities. While not for everyone, Enzyme's ability to produce both beautiful and chaotic sounds makes it a compelling choice for those seeking to push sonic boundaries.

Dead Before It's Time

I learned about Enzyme through an interview with OPN, who characterized it as grey and toxic. It's one of the few synths to utilize the incredibly confusing and complex method of sound generation called "Scanned Synthesis". I still have yet to figure out how it works, and there's probably a reason it's not more common due to it's complexity. What made Enzyme so great though for sound design is it's randomize function. You don't really need to know how Enzyme works to get cool, aggressive, cutting, sounds out of it. Overall, it was just a really cool and unique synth that sadly died before it's time.

"That was a synth called Enzyme, and It was like a really buggy synth that crashed all the time, but it was the most corrosive, gray, poisonous sound."
