Behold the Hydra: Steve Vai's new triple-necked beast of a guitar | MusicRadar

musicradar.com

Steve Vai's Ibanez Hydra is a spectacular showcase of innovation and creativity, blending seven- and twelve-string guitars with a four-string bass and even sympathetic harp strings. This triple-necked marvel is not just a visual spectacle; it promises a rich sound palette for the adventurous musician. However, while its versatility is impressive, the complexity may be daunting for those seeking a straightforward playing experience. Vai's commitment to creating meaningful music with the Hydra is commendable, yet it risks being perceived as more of a novelty than a practical instrument. Ultimately, the Hydra is a testament to artistic ambition, but it may not suit every player's needs.

In this video, Vai can be seen playing his new Custom Ibanez Triple-Neck "The Hydra".

"The Hydra", features one body, three necks (two headstocked) that include: a 7-String guitar neck (middle), a 12-string guitar neck (top, half-fretless shortways), and a 4-string 3/4 scale bass neck with no headstock (bottom, half-fretless longways). As well, the instrument also has 13 sympathetic harp strings, single coil, humbucking, piezo, MIDI, and sustainer pickups, hardtail and tremolo bridges, phase splitters and much more.

Given all of those features, it should come as no surprise that this odd instrument took five years to design & manufacture.

A Prototype version of the instrument can be seen here on Vai's offical website.
