REVIEW: iConnectivity iConnectMIDI4+ - Part 1 - Hardware - Practical Usage

practicalusage.com

The iConnectivity iConnectMIDI4+ impresses with its solid build, extensive connectivity options, and potential for network MIDI usage, promising robust performance for tech-savvy musicians. However, the review points out a critical flaw in the power socket design, which may lead to reliability issues. While the overall hardware is lauded for its thoughtful engineering, the sloppy execution of the power component tempers the initial enthusiasm. The sentiment stands as hopeful yet cautious, with the anticipation of further software insights to follow.

iConnectMIDI4+ Lightning Edition review | MusicRadar

musicradar.com

The iConnectivity iConnectMIDI4+ is a powerhouse for multi-device musicians, excelling with its flexible MIDI routing and audio integration capabilities. Its robust build and versatile connectivity options, including USB and Ethernet, make it an ideal choice for those with complex MIDI setups. However, it performs best with Mac-based DAWs, as Windows users may encounter challenges, such as reliance on ASIO4ALL drivers and potential latency issues. Despite these hurdles, its ability to handle both MIDI and audio inter-device communication makes it a valuable tool for tech-savvy musicians.

Little swiss army knife for connecting your MIDI gear!

I was a bit sceptic when buying this medium sized, affordable MIDI interface from a relatively unknown brand (compared to Roland/Edirol, MOTU...) but was pleasently surprised to find out that it is a little gem. Like a little swiss army knife for MIDI...

You can easily extend the USB via a simple USB-hub to connect even more MIDI devices. I even hooked up my Roland UM-880 to have 8x8 additional DINs port and connected the ethernet to my WiFi extender so I could use Patch Base wirelessly on my iPad to create patches on my Matrix 1000... Or you can connect the MIDI device to multiple computers via USB and/or Ethernet.

With the software you can easily route/filter any MIDI port to any other MIDI port.

Additionally you can even connect an iPad and pass the audio via USB (but I didn't actually use that very much).

The downsides? Just a few... Even though there's a plenthora of MIDI ports and channels (each USB connection has another 16 MIDI channels) that can be routed internally, if you hook the interface up to a computer via USB, you can only map to 16 channels. Not really a constraint of the interface itself but be aware. Ethernet RTP-MIDI connections are also limited to 4 ports. The new X-series can map all ports via ethernet.

There are no controls on the hardware (unlike e.g. my trusty UM-880) and there is only one preset that can be loaded in the box. You will need to use the software to make changes or upload a new preset. X-series have multiple presets that can be uploaded to the box.

Make sure you are using the latest firmware and latest version of Auracle. Most of the complaints you read on the internet relate to the previous software (iConfig) which was a nightmare to use, or to the early version of Auracle, which was easier to use but did not had all the functionality of iConfig. But the latest versions of Auracle work just fine.

Support is a mixed bag. Mostly it's quite good and responsive but occasionally it's really bad. Worst case scenario, just log a new ticket the week later.

But don't let that scare you... Most issues have been addressed in the latest firmware/software. Actually, I 'm so pleased that I just bought the bigger brother: mioXL This model looses the multiple host device (computer) connections and audio pass-thru but comes with even more ports/channels and presets that can be loaded from the front panel. And I wouldn't even consider MOTU or Edirol anymore...
