Description

The M72s by Mercury

Mercury M72s is a high-end all-tube microphone preamplifier inspired by the legendary Telefunken/Siemens V72s modules used in the iconic REDD.37 consoles at Abbey Road Studios during the early Beatles recordings. Manufactured by Mercury Recording Equipment, the M72s is designed to faithfully reproduce the rich harmonic saturation, punchy midrange, and smooth vintage tone of the original German broadcast amplifiers while adding modern studio functionality. It features custom transformers, premium tube circuitry, stepped gain control, and integrated DI inputs for instruments. The preamp is widely praised for its warm low end, musical breakup characteristics, and detailed transient response, making it a favorite for vocals, guitars, bass, and orchestral recording. With modern additions like phantom power, polarity reverse, and selectable input pads, the M72s combines vintage sonic character with professional contemporary workflow.

Field Test: Mercury M72s Studio Microphone Amplifier

mixonline.com

The Mercury M72s is a vintage-inspired tube mic preamp that delivers a thick, warm sound reminiscent of classic recordings. Its robust construction and high-quality components offer reliability without vintage drawbacks like noise or inconsistency. While its sound might not suit every vocal style, it excels at enhancing instruments like flute and bass guitar, providing clarity and presence. The built-in DI is particularly impressive, offering versatility for recording different sources. At a steep price, the M72s is a worthwhile investment for those seeking a modern unit with a nostalgic sound profile.
