Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about ART Voice Channel.

Mods and upgrades

  • Swapping the stock tube with a JJ Electronics ECC-83s tube significantly improves sound quality, particularly for voice-over work.

    Source
  • Replacing the stock tube with a Genalex Gold Lion provides noticeable warmth and "grit" when saturated, enhancing tonal coloration.

    Source

Comparisons

  • The ART Voice Channel can sound close to the Avalon 737sp, despite its starved plate design, offering a cost-effective alternative for those seeking similar characteristics.

    Source

User experience

  • Owners note that the ART Voice Channel's noise floor can be lower than some tubeless preamps like the Focusrite ISA One when upgraded with a JJ tube.

    Source
  • Some owners have found the ART Voice Channel to be cleaner and less noisy after tube replacements, improving overall sound clarity.

    Source

Features and functionality

  • Users can achieve saturation by pushing the input/gain knob, allowing for a controlled saturation clipping effect.

Critic Reviews

ART Voice Channel

soundonsound.com

The ART Voice Channel offers an impressive array of features for its price, making it a versatile tool for diverse studio needs. Its preamp provides decent tonal adjustments but lacks neutrality, tending towards a mid-range forwardness that may not suit all vocals. The EQ and dynamics sections are more utilitarian, excelling in problem-solving rather than enhancing audio musically. While the de-esser performs admirably, latency issues with USB output and the lack of low-latency drivers hinder its practicality. Overall, it’s a feature-rich unit that excels in versatility, though it lacks the sonic finesse for those prioritizing audio quality over functionality.

ART Voice Channel review | MusicRadar

musicradar.com

The ART Voice Channel is a versatile, well-built channel strip offering excellent sound quality and impressive digital connections. Its switchable valve supply voltage adds to its appeal, providing rich, clean preamps with a satisfying valve distortion option. The dynamics section, while transparent, lacks character, and the de-esser is somewhat ineffective. However, the unit excels in routing options and A/D conversion, making it a strong contender for those seeking quality within a sub-£1,000 budget. Despite some EQ limitations, the overall value and performance make it a commendable choice for single-channel recording.

Clean & Solid

I have been using this since 2020 when I began work on a huge soundtrack. I needed extra juice / pre-amp for a set of mics to run into my CL1B and one of the folks on the team gifted me this.

I had previously been using these and similar models for a few years when I was producing audiobooks at a bunch of studios and was surprised they opted for ART over other brands. Once I gave these a whirl, I was pleasantly surprised.

I tend to use mine for gain, gate and disengage the rest.

ART Voice Channel

The Voice Channel provides Class A tube preamp quality and clean gain with an integrated dynamics processor and semi-parametric EQ, as well as a range of digital outputs for a versatile, powerful recording front-end. In addition, the EQ can be patched before or after the dynamics for added flexibility, and a separate insert jack lets you take advantage of even more routing options with the Voice Channel.
