Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Pittsburgh Modular System 10.1+.

Mods and upgrades

  • Owners recommend the Doepfer Wasp filter for a unique, gritty sound reminiscent of the MS-20, enhancing the synth's character.

    Source
  • Consider Mutable Instruments Braids or Intellijel Cylonix Shapeshifter for adding sophisticated wavetable oscillators, expanding sound design possibilities.

    Source
  • The Expert Sleepers Disting serves as a versatile 16-in-1 function module in just 4 HP, ideal for filling multiple roles like LFO or mixer.

    Source
  • Adding a Make Noise Function module (8 HP) offers extended functionality similar to Maths, while remaining space-efficient.

    Source

Other

  • Owners report that the System 10.1+ behaves like a standard monosynth without patch cables, but requires a MIDI signal to trigger the envelope and open the VCA for sound.

    Source

User experience

  • Beginners should expect a steep learning curve with modular systems, but experimenting with patch cables and understanding signal flow are crucial for mastering the System 10.1+.

    Source
  • Owners emphasize the importance of having multiple VCAs, highlighting their necessity in modular setups for managing signal flow effectively.

    Source
  • The mixer module in the System 10.1+ allows for unique signal and CV multiplication and combination, enhancing creative patching possibilities.

    Source
  • Owners express that the System 10.1+ is a great starting point for modular systems, though some find it basic without additional modules like the MicroBrute for extra features.

    Source

Software and compatibility

  • Users without a MIDI keyboard can utilize a USB-to-MIDI cable and an audio interface to send MIDI signals from a computer to the System 10.1+.

    Source

Setup and maintenance

  • Connecting the ENV IN to the SQR OUT allows the synth to auto-play notes without a MIDI keyboard, enabling users to experiment with sound production.

    Source
  • In a studio setting, tuning stability of the System 10.1+ is manageable, but frequent tuning in live band settings is challenging due to oscillator drift.

    Source

Features and functionality

  • The System 10.1+ relies on note information from a MIDI keyboard for internal wiring to function, highlighting the need for MIDI connectivity for sound output.

    Source
  • The Pittsburgh Modular System 10.1+ offers non-typical Moog sounds with its LPG, making it a versatile addition to setups including Moog synthesizers.

    Source
  • The System 10.1+ includes a MIDI module with a paraphonic mode, requiring an extra oscillator to utilize this feature.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • Simple sequencers or random voltage sources are suggested based on desired soundscapes or musical styles, offering flexibility in creative expression.

    Source

Comparisons

  • The System 10.1+ is described as more versatile than Doepfer for modular synthesis, although it is considered a stepping stone compared to full Eurorack systems.

It's great but you might wanna save your money for something else

It's great but when I got it in the mail, it was broken. I couldn't play more than one semitone on a keyboard, leaving me to physically crank the Frequency knob (which doesn't work too well). They offer a 1 year warranty so I got that going for me, but I wish I either bought the Moog Mother-32 or build my own eurorack system.
