Roland System-100 - Attack Magazine

attackmagazine.com

Roland's System 100 is a powerhouse of analog synthesis, boasting a robust low-end and a unique semi-modular design that sets it apart from other synths. With its strong capabilities, including a versatile oscillator and a powerful filter, it’s perfect for techno aficionados and synth-pop pioneers alike. However, the System 100's limited production run makes it pricey and hard to find, which may deter some musicians. While the modern emulation offers a more accessible alternative, it can’t fully replicate the original's character. Overall, for those who can invest, the System 100 is a timeless piece that delivers rich, gritty sounds.

Roland System 100

The Roland System 100's vintage appeal is undeniable, showcasing a rich history in modular synthesis. However, its convoluted setup and niche usage may deter modern musicians seeking simplicity. While the sound quality and analog warmth shine through, the steep learning curve and limited functionality for contemporary needs make it less appealing. For enthusiasts or collectors, it’s a nostalgic gem; for others, it may feel like a relic of the past.

While the Roland System 100 PLUG-OUT captures the essence of its vintage counterpart with impressive sound and retro aesthetics, it suffers from a few design flaws that may frustrate users. Its installation lacks flexibility, and compatibility issues with popular DAWs like Bitwig are disappointing. Additionally, the limited physical controls when used with the SYSTEM-1 hardware restrict functionality, particularly for essential features like the sample-and-hold module. Despite its rich sound quality and potential for creativity, the overall user experience is hampered by these shortcomings, making it a tough sell for those seeking a seamless integration in their setup.

"These two are off for a cleanup, get some crackling pots fixed, and have a general service done. These are the synth modules from the Roland System 100 (not the 100m). For reference, the Human League used a system 100 for a lot of the sounds on their pre 1980 recordings."
