Reviews

Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Silvertone 1449 Electric Guitar.

Setup and maintenance

  • The lack of an adjustable truss rod requires using light strings to maintain low relief; one owner manages relief at 2 thousandths with hybrid 8s and 9s.

    Source

Build quality

  • Original models use Brazilian Rosewood fretboards, which are praised for their smoothness after cleaning and oiling, despite subtle planer marks.

    Source
  • The reissue's Daphne blue finish is praised for its closer resemblance to the desired shade, differing from Squier's similar models' color variance.

    Source

Mods and upgrades

  • Owners improve tuning stability by replacing the original nut with bone or aluminum and adding string trees to address the break angle issue.

    Source
  • It's suggested to replace the stock tuners immediately, as they might not meet user expectations.

    Source

Features and functionality

  • The 1449 has a fixed bridge that adjusts only in height, complicating action settings; users suggest a neck shim for better setup.

    Source
  • The reissue model's lipstick pickups deliver high output with a full, bassy tone, especially in the neck and middle positions, contradicting expectations of thin sound.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • Despite being rough as a primary instrument, it excels in studio settings, particularly for overdubs, due to its unique chime from the metal nut.

    Source
  • Despite initial skepticism, the modern lipstick pickups prove versatile and robust, suitable for a variety of styles beyond their vintage reputation.

    Source
  • The guitar's weight might be a consideration for those with back issues, despite being lighter than other solid bodies.

    Source

User experience

  • Owners with extensive guitar collections, including over 30 instruments, find the Silvertone 1449 reissue quickly becomes a favorite due to its unique sound and feel.

    Source

Comparisons

  • The reissue's pickups offer a thicker, fuller tone compared to typical Strat pickups, challenging preconceived notions about lipstick pickup sound quality.

    Source
  • The Silvertone 1449 reissue is heavier than a Danelectro '63 reissue but offers similar pricing and more vintage-correct construction.

    Source
  • The reissue's lipstick pickups are comparable to those in Danelectros, slightly better than stock pickups in a ‘96 Ibanez Talman.

Awesome

This guitar looks, feels and sounds unique. It's great if you want something different. The cons are the tuners are cheap quality. It takes a lot of winding before hearing it change pitch, I wouldn't trust this on a tour unless you upgrade the tuners. The volume knob was very loose when it came out of the box but thankfully I had the right tool to tighten this. Overall, it's a great guitar for the value.

Amped-up One of the most clever and well-known concepts in the early ’60s guitar boom was the Silvertone Amp-in-case line. For well under $100, you could get a guitar that came in a case featuring a 5-watt (later, 6-watt) tube amp built right in. Just open the case halfway, stand it up, switch it on, and wail. The original guitar in the 1962 kit (1448) was a single pickup, short-neck model. A year later, the 2-pickup 1449 was introduced and the Amp-in-case really took off. The 1449 is the most rare of the breed, being replaced by the almost identical redburst 1457 in 1964. This guitar screams.
