Sony PCM-M10 Review

kenrockwell.com

The Sony PCM-M10 stands out as a compact powerhouse in portable audio recording. Praised for its superior build and sound quality, it outshines pricier competitors like the Zoom H4n and Tascam DR-08 with ease of use and exceptional audio clarity. Sony's decades of expertise are evident, delivering a transparent, noise-free, and wideband sound experience. Its intuitive interface and quick setup make it a favorite, though it lacks digital audio inputs/outputs and a time-code feature. Overall, this recorder impresses with its performance, making it a top choice for discerning audiophiles and professionals alike.

Sony PCM-M10 - Transom

transom.org

The Sony PCM-M10 strikes a harmonious balance between portability and professional-level audio quality, making it an ideal choice for on-the-go recording. Its compact size doesn’t sacrifice usability, with a practical layout and robust build quality. Audio enthusiasts will appreciate its impressive sound fidelity, versatile recording options, and exceptional battery life. However, while it excels with built-in mics, the lack of XLR inputs limits its compatibility with certain condenser mics, and its plastic mini-jack input raises durability concerns. Despite these minor drawbacks, the PCM-M10 emerges as a standout device for both beginners and seasoned recordists seeking reliability without the bulk.

Quality and ease of portable recording

About the same size and construction of a first-generation Nintendo Game Boy, the Sony PCMM10 series of portable recorders (the "R" distinction means Red color; "B" for Black) is the perfect companion to any sound recordist/hobbyist capturing audio out on the field. With built-in 4 GB storage capacity, added with a 16 GB microSD chip gives me the freedom to record at will and for what feels like forever. Frequency response of 20 Hz to 40 kHz (Line in) @ 96KHz coupled with very user-friendly controls like a fluid REC LEVEL knob and MIC SENS (ATT) switch make it easy to attenuate high amplitude situations or pickup faint sounds (high sensitivity mode). I recently started to utilize the T MARK (track mark) button during non-interrupted recording to navigate more efficiently during playback as opposed to search/scanning via FFWD/RWD buttons. The PCMM10 is top quality you can only expect from Sony and at a decent price.
