Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Yamaha CP4 STAGE.

User experience

  • Yamaha's CFX piano sound quality is highly praised, but the CP4's 38-pound weight can be a drawback for older users frequently transporting it.

    Source
  • Owners note that the CP4, despite its age, remains a favored choice due to its robust build and superior onboard sound quality compared to newer models like the CP88.

    Source
  • Owners appreciate the CP4's lighter key action compared to the CP88, which can be beneficial for those experiencing wrist pain from heavier actions.

    Source

Comparisons

  • The CP4 offers superior sound quality, control options, and action compared to the Korg D1, despite a slight weight increase.

    Source
  • The CP4 offers more comprehensive features compared to the Korg D1, which is better suited as a controller given its limited onboard sound quality.

    Source
  • Some players prefer the CFIII sound on the CP4 over the CFX on the CP88, citing better tonal quality for their needs.

    Source

Setup and maintenance

  • Used CP4s may have dirty contacts causing velocity spikes; Yamaha provides support for repairs even for discontinued models.

    Source
  • Sensor pad/strip replacements may be needed due to wear over time, especially if the CP4 has seen extensive use.

    Source

Value and pricing

  • $1000 USD is a reasonable upper limit for purchasing a used CP4, considering potential repair costs for common contact issues.

    Source
  • A user secured a CP4 for $500, indicating that prices can vary significantly, potentially providing good deals with patience.

    Source
  • A used CP4 can be obtained for a similar price to a used RD88, making it an attractive option for budget-conscious buyers.

    Source

Features and functionality

  • The CP4 includes pitch bend and mod wheel controls, which are absent in more barebones models like the Korg D1.

    Source
  • Controls for transpose can be frustrating due to button placement requiring two hands, potentially hindering on-the-fly adjustments during performances.

    Source
  • The CP4 offers more gig-ready sounds, including mono-compatible pianos, which are beneficial for live performances in dense band settings.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • The CP4's interface is not as immediate as the CP88, but it still allows for quick parameter adjustments, making it suitable for those who need moderate control during performances.

This is good.

The piano is great. It is of great quality, and it feels nice. The keys are weighted and they feel just right. It looks good and is easy to operate. The acoustic piano sounds are great, the Rhodes is lacking a bit though... The range of sounds is not overwhelming. There are enough to have fun with it, and if you forgot your synth or your pad, it can be a replacement. Not a great one. Yea! It is recommendable. Have fun

best stage piano

I really loved the CP300 and my old Kurzweil CP88. Now I have this beauty, it's very light and portable (even on train), on stage it's a monster with his stunning sound razor eq's. great sounds overall, fave is the rhodes 75 and the muted clav and of course the ac. pianos!

There are a few shots of his "piano" as he calls it. You can see the it clearly from above in a picture from ERS 2016 Nashville, uploaded in October 15 2016. It has a few red paint or tape on it and he keeps an iPad on the piano aswell, but you can see it resembles the CP4
