Andy Bell's Effects Pedals

"Ibanez CP-9 Compressor. This is the only pedal that stays on throughout the gig. it’s the first thing my guitar goes into and I think this is an 80’s unit. It’s an eBay job, they don’t make them anymore. I think I got one because my friend Andy Hackett (who is in the Rockingbirds and also runs Angel Music on Denmark Street, the best guitar shop in London) has one on his pedal board. Gem also swears by these."

"Fulltone Octo-Fuzz. I was recommended this one by Gem, it’s a VERY Gem Archer sound. Also very Neil Young. If you want to know how it sounds, play “Sons of the Stage” by Beady Eye, all the lead playing is going through this. It kind of ‘overwhelms’ the guitar sound and makes it sound like a herd of rampaging buffalo. maybe that’s why it reminds me of Neil Young."

According to Guitar Geek's rig diagram, Boss DS-1 is one of the pedals he uses.

"Another compressor. This is my “one louder” pedal. There are certain times in a gig when you need to turn up when everything is already ridiculously loud. This does that. I only use it a couple of times a gig."

Find it on:

“I have two different fuzz units: I have the Octafuzz on the fuzz setting, not the octave; and a Super-Fuzz. They work for different songs on different parts.”

Find it on:

"MXR Micro Amp. This is the next level of volume up from the Red Compressor. It’s on for most of the gig but it’s not too lairy (because I don’t have it turned up too much, as you can see)."

Find it on:

"Removed the Strymon Tape Echo Pedal. Added a Strymon Mobius for BPM timed Tremelo, Leslie Simulator and much more in the way of modulation to come, as I get my head round all the possibilities. I’d like to get hold of an Expression pedal for this. Any tips? Well, that’s about it anyway. Pete Carroll my guitar tech, did a great job of cleaning the board up for me and replacing all the cables etc. I am pretty much gig ready. Can’t wait! /AB"

"Holy Grail Reverb. On Hall setting. I have this on quite a lot, I don’t like my guitar to sound too dry onstage and this helps. probably use it too much actually." - Andy Bell about this pedal.

Find it on:

"Not an effects pedal, this is a footswitch I hold down when I’m singing into the microphone, to switch it on. The rest of the time the mic is off. It’s useful when there’s loads of noise on stage."

Find it on:

"Strymon El Capistan – Digital Tape Echo. It’s delay with loads of extra’s that make it sound and feel like a real old Tape echo unit (except that real tape echo units are always breaking). By the way, now we’ve crossed over to the second pedal board, the Mike Hill one where everything is affecting the sound separately."

Find it on:

"Ibanez TS-9 Tube Screamer. The King of pedals. This is a reissue. I have a couple of old ones. I’ve compared them and I can’t tell the difference. I can’t recommend this highly enough."

Find it on:

"Eventide Space Reverb. Set to a slightly modified version of ‘Black Hole’ setting. This was pulled out by Dave Sitek at the start of the sessions for “BE” and used throughout that album, not just on guitars but on just about anything and everything. As soon as I heard it I ordered one, and I used it live on Beady Eye songs such as “Flick Of The Finger”, “Soul Love” and “Dont’ Brother Me”."

Find it on:

According to Guitar Geek's rig diagram, this is one of the pedals he used in 1996.

Find it on:

"Eventide Time Factor. Another posh delay unit. I use this one purely for its backwards setting. It takes some getting used to but when it’s set up as above, you play in a few seconds of guitar (which you don’t hear) and then it feeds it back to you reversed. With a bit of practise you can appear to play backwards in real time. (Gem used to do this with an earlier pedal made by Line 6 in the Oasis era)."

"60’s Trem. Simple and great."
