Positive Mental Trip's Effects Pedals

Luke Weiler of Positive Mental Trip plays the larger EHX Metal Muff with Top Boost. When I saw Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth using this pedal I knew I could make some cool sounds with it. It was used on the 2017 Positive Mental Trip album “The Black and White Album” and also is on some of the demos for the 2019 “Love Never Dies” album. It’s a muff that can cut through a mix like a razor blade.
Luke Weiler of Positive Mental Trip has used the J Rockett Audio Design Archer Ikon live and in the studio from 2017-2019. It is tied for his favorite overdrive and works well stacked with luke’s 06’ Fulltone OCD. The Fulltone OCD was luke’s only overdrive pedal from 2006-2017 with Positive Mental Trip. However the Archer IKON was just so different. “I’ve always liked my lead sound with the OCD really thick and saturated to get it where I want it. When I plugged the Archer IKON in and heard my lead sound exactly the way I wanted it and it was still a good semi-Clean sound my mind was blown. I had never experienced the KLON-Esque mojo i had heard so much about. I had thought my Fulltone OCD was all I ever needed. The Archer IKON proved me wrong. -PMT Luke
Luke Weiler of Positive Mental Trip has played a TC Electronic Viscous vibe Live at every show from 2017-2019. He has used it on many recordings in those 2 years some made it onto PMT’s “The Black and White album”(2017) and it was quick to be on guitar solos and rhythm guitar parts on some of the 1 st songs recorded for “Love Never Dies” in 2018. “I’ve been tracking guitar parts for the album for over a year. I’ll think I’ve got all the Viscous vibe on this album I need... and then I come across the “Count Funkula” toneprint and the producer hears it and hits record immediately.” PMT Luke
Luke Weiler of Positive Mental Trip is a huge fan of the TECH 21 Fly Rig 5. “ For shows where I’m playing backing up other area musicians on guitar, they might want me to have a smaller rig on stage. The TECH 21 Fly rig sounds great with or without an amp. (He would rather the amp!) Luke has been seen tracking guitar for the new Positive Mental Trip album using the tech 21 fly rig for the less experimental guitar tracks. “My producer in Woodstock is a big fan of me going direct so when he sees me show up with a fly rig and a splitter instead of 3 pedalboards and amps ... he seems happier about the session. When recording an album with a producer on some songs it’s really important to me we are on the same page and mutually happy with the recording session experience.
Luke Weiler of Positive Mental Trip is a huge fan of Analog Man guitar pedals. He has a black and gold Astro Tone Fuzz pedal that he has used for some recording sessions for the 2019 Positive Mental Trip album. He has also used this pedal during recent Loud and Conscious People recording sessions along side the J Rockett Archer IKON stacked or into the 2 notes Le Clean tube preamp.
Luke Weiler has played a DOD Gonkulator Ring Modulator since early 2018. He has only used it live once and it didn’t quite fit the older repertoire live. He has used it on bass and guitar on some demos for the new album. Unsure if any will make it on the new album that have already been recorded. Luke was hoping to take a killer EBOW Solo with the GONK on the new album but the jury is out whether that will come to fruition in time for final mixing and mastering towards the end of the summer.
Luke Weiler of Positive Mental Trip is using many DREADBOX pedals on Bass as well as guitar tracks while tracking for the “Love Never Dies” album set to release at the end of August 2019. Luke has used the DREADBOX “ Omikron” extravagant waveshaper, “Epsilon” Versatile distortion,” Lamda 2”extensive Filter, “Kappa 2 “supreme controller/8 step sequencer, and TAFF 2 scientific tremolo while tracking bass and guitar parts in 2019. Tracks like “Sunshine Beams”, “The Golden Silence”, “Gaia Hypothesis”, “Stink Bug Zoo” and many other tracks on the album will have a really wet crazy bassline or guitar part using these extremely, synth-like, “outside the box” pedals blended with clean basslines and clean guitar tracks in the mixes.
In a 2019 YouTube video by PMTluke titled "Compressor Shootout V1," Positive Mental Trip showcases the Line 6 ToneCore Constrictor Compressor in a studio setting. Known for its distinctive sound, this compressor is used alongside other unique Line 6 pedals like the Verbzilla and Echo Park. Despite its rarity in studio environments, it's highlighted for its cool tone and affordability, often available in mint condition for around $29.
Luke Weiler of Positive Mental Trip has played a Fulltone OCD live since 2006. It was his only overdrive live until he added a J Rockett Audio Designs Archer Ikon to his live rig. Luke plays the older version of the OCD as there are no arrows around the knobs. It is said to be a version 1.1 or 1.2.
Luke Weiler of Positive Mental Trip has been known to use the BOSS TE-2 Tera Echo live and in the studio. Ussually found between his BOSS DD3 and TC HOF v.1 at the end of his effects chain on stage. You can hear subtle use of the BOSS Tera Echo on almost every lead guitar solo of live footage of the band from 2016-2018. You can hear extreme use of this pedal and it’s freeze functionality at the beginning of “the black and white album” on its 1 st track “the road”. You can also hear the Tera Echo used in a very extreme way on the final track of the “black and white album”,(2017) titled “Circles”. “Circles” is a close to 12 minute prog Jam which ends with a very experimental psychadelic Delay self oscillation type ending. Luke still uses the BOSS Tera Echo live but has stopped using it in the studio. It is said he even used it on some drum sounds in 2017.
Luke Weiler of Positive Mental Trip has used the BOSS BF-3 Flanger on his live pedalboard during the 2015-2019 era of PMT. In 2018 he started to only use the BF-3 in momentary to bring it in a parts of the riffs and use it to accent certain parts of a song or guitar solo. He has been using the BF-3 like this when playing lead guitar with John Pinder and Crooked Toe as well. The BOSS BF-3 is one of the only Flanger pedals that has this function. It is a very useful Flanger for the momentary function alone but even if using the BF-3 in the more traditional sense the BF-3 is a great choice for live shows. Luke used the BF-3 on lots of recordings and demos in the 2017 PMT era. Most flanger sounds on the 2019 Positive Mental Trip album will be MOOG Flanger sounds but the BF-3 will be used to re-create the recorded sounds live. No MOOG modulation pedals have been seen on the Positive Mental Trip live pedalboards. The BOSS BF-3 is a constant.
Luke Weiler of Positive Mental Trip has used the disontinued (bucket brigade chip)deluxe electric Mistress Flanger since 2017. Due to size of the pedal Luke has not used it live yet with Positive Mental Trip but has used it on many studio recordings. Definitely one of the coolest flanger pedals around. Big size but big sounds and as it is with almost all EHX pedals unique functionality.
Luke Weiler of Positive Mental Trip has played a TC Electronic Helix Phaser Live and in the studio since 2017. Luke is known for sometimes having 2 phasers and a univibe pedal on his live board. Lots of thick swirls on funky rhythms and saturated heavy guitars is also common on Positive Mental Trip Albums.
Luke Weiler of Positive Mental Trip is a huge fan of Analog Man guitar pedals and loves the simplicity and sound of the Analog Man Juicer. The Analog Man Juicer is an updated clone of the legendary, Dan Armstrong orange squeezer compressor.
Luke Weiler of Positive Mental Trip is currently using the Radial Engineering VOCO LOCO to use some of his favorite guitar pedals on vocals. So far only demo versions of songs from the new album are on bandcamp ...but will be polished and released later on in 2019 ...when everything comes together and the album feels finished.
Luke Weiler of Positive Mental Trip does enjoy recording with some of the digital effects and amp models in the ZOOM B3. “When not going direct or into some analog MOOG pedals I really enjoy some of the sounds in this ZOOM B3. Like the R24 and the Q8 I also use, I feel like the ZOOM B3 gives you a tone of very use-able bass tones in this unit for the price. Very cool filters and such. I’ve used it more on demos and the new material then the 2017 album but it’s on “The Black and White Album” here and there. I went direct most of that album with the bass but when I used effects it was all the ZOOM B3 at that point in my bass guitar journey.” PMT Luke
Luke Weiler of Positive Mental Trip has used the MOOG MF minifooger Analog Delay on guitar as well as vocals since 2018.
Luke Weiler of Positive Mental Trip has used the MOOER Pitch Box. Live he is seen using the EHX Pitch Fork a lot more in recent years but in 2017 he used the MOOER Pitch Box many times live and on some demos.
Luke Weiler of Positive Mental Trip uses a Source Audio Dual expression pedal to control up to 2 of his pedals live at the same time. He is known for using this Source Audio pedal to control the Electro Harmonix Pitch Fork and the BOSS AW-3 at the same time live. His experiments with this expression pedal and some other expression pedals will never end in the studio and live.
Luke Weiler of Positive Mental Trip has played a Source Audio Orbital Modulator since early 2018. He really loves the Uni-vibe sound but also likes some of the digital chorus, flanger, and phaser sounds in the pedal as well. This pedal is a digital modulation Swiss Army knife and for a digital pedal that does a lot it does a lot very well. Seeing it on Jake Cininger of Umphreys Mcgee’s pedalboard and loving his Uni-vibe sounds and playing and tone overall made luke pull the trigger on this pedal used. Luke has never played it live yet but has used it on many recording sessions and has used it on what are believed to be “keeper guitar tracks” on the new studio album in the works . (“Love Never Dies” 2019)
Luke Weiler of Positive Mental Trip loves the simplicity of the 1 knob Phasor. Also a fan of DOD pedals(gonk, Envelope Filter etc.) you can hear the swirl of the phasor 201 Re-issue and also the sounds of the BOSS BF-3 Flanger mixed into 2 different tracks and blended into the mix. December Winds was a b-side off of “The Black and White Album” which was an album recorded and no budget and it was not toured in support of. Both guitar tracks had the 06’ Fulltone OCD > phasor or flanger. The bass tracks on this song were wet as well. 1 bass track uses the Radial LONDON BONES guitar distortion pedal, and another track uses a trippy synth from ZOOM B3 bass multi effects unit.
Luke Weiler of Positive Mental Trip is using the Two-Notes Le Clean tube preamp in the studio recording electric guitar sounds for the 3 rd album. Between the Fly Rig 5 and the Le Clean I can achieve a lot of cool guitar sounds direct without plug ins and with very little post production needed. The Two-Notes Le Clean is definitely the best real tube preamp for studio use I’ve found so far. Guitar tracks are sounding great direct with this pedal. I put a few of my fav pedals in line before I like a would and amp and just go.
Luke Weiler of Positive Mental Trip has experimented a lot with the Source Audio VENTRIS dual engine reverb. He loves it with or without the expression pedal. “The Ventris is definitely my favorite reverb pedal I have ever played. I am very inspired by this pedal and hope to record with it on many albums in the next few years. Really love the shimmer sounds on this pedal and how you can combine it with the other great reverb sounds. Few pedals close to the $400 range do I ever feel are really worth it but this one really has the goods. The Strymon Timeline for Delay and the Source Audio VENTRIS reverb are the only 2 expensive digital pedals that have really blown my mind lately. And I’ve tried quite a few.”
Luke Weiler of Positive Mental Trip has been using a BOSS BCB 60 pedalboard for his top jacked pedals he uses in the studio. Also known as “minifooger board” or “rig B”. He doesn’t have a lot of faith in the construction of the board especcially the clips that close it. “It’s a great studio board for my top jacked minifoogers but I don’t see any plastic clip pedalboards being good for any live situation. As far as pedalboards go compared to the SKB PS-45 and the nice Furman pedalboards, they just don’t make ones as nice as they did 10 years ago. They claim it’s evolution and all but I’m not sure it is.”
Luke Weiler of Positive Mental Trip explored and experimented with the Big MUFF sounds in the JHS MUFFULETTA extensively in 2018. Luke played this pedal almost every day for about 5 months straight while borrowing it. He did not play it live and it may appear on only one track on the 2019 PMT album. “I was really impressed by the JHS version and to have all those Big Muff sounds in one box. A small unit like that just blew my mind. I think JHS doing it has pushed EHX to release these affordable higher quality op-amp and Triangle muffs that are in small enclosures. I’m a huge fan of Big Muff sounds, guys like J Mascis of Dinosaur JR and his really dirty lead sounds that just scream those albums over the top of very dirty rythms at times. I also loved bands like MUDHONEY who just had these really dirty cool rythm guitar riffs and basically were using very few pedals and the main pedal being a Big Muff to my knowledge and still making great music. I love Piece of Cake. Then you got guys like David Gilmour who really hit your soul with those expressive guitar solos and sounds. The Big Muff can cover so much ground and be used in so many different contexts and styles of music. So to have the practically the full catalog of big muffs in one small pedal was something I had a blast with.
Positive Mental Trip play an earthquaker Devices fuzz pedal.
Luke Weiler of Positive Mental Trip has been known to use many of the TC Electronic 4 knob Toneprint pedals. Luke is rarely seen using the TC Electronic Flashback V.1 live but it has been used on many Positive Mental Trip recordings since 2017.
Luke Weiler of Positive Mental Trip has been seen using a BOSS DD-20 live and in the studio. He has used BOSS digital Delay/echo pedals almost exclusively live since 2015. He is most commonly seen using the BOSS DD-3 and BOSS TE-2 Tera Echo live on his “tight 12” live board but sometimes switches those 2 out for the 4 killer presets on the DD-20 giga Delay for select shows. You can hear ambient psychadelic sounds only the DD-20 makes on certain songs on “the black and white album”.(2017)
Luke Weiler of Positive Mental Trip is known to use the MOOG Low Pass Filter with and without expression pedals on guitar as well as bass on studio recordings. Positive Mental Trip uses many MOOG pedals on the 2018-2019 recordings on multiple instruments.
Luke Weiler of Positive Mental Trip has used mostly the BOSS PH-3 w/ and without expression live since 2016 and on the 2017 album. He has been seen using both the TC Electronic Helix Phaser and the BOSS PH-3 side by side live in late 2017-2018. Recently though Luke has been using an old school BOSS PH-2 Super Phaser on some 2019 recordings and has been seen bringing it onto live boards in 2019. In the 2006-2009 Positive Mental Trip live band era Luke used an EHX Small Stone Phaser which Steve Repka still uses when he plays with PMT live. Positive Mental Trip has been experimenting with the MOOG 12 stage phaser sounds on electronic drums, bass, vocals, acoustic guitars and electric guitars in the studio but will most likely not be using anything but the BOSS PH-2, PH-3 and TC Electronic Helix Phaser to re-create the MOOG sounds live.
