Description
The DOD Gonkulator Ringmod (Reissue) serves up a platter of distinct sounds that go from grungy tremolos to bell-like chimes. This unique multi-effect pedal, a reissue of the original late '90s model, is famous for its raw and gritty tones, which have graced numerous studio tracks from the likes of Sonic Youth, Tool, Incubus, and Primus. The Gonkulator doesn’t just bring back the vintage ring modulator sounds; it enhances them with an invaluable grunge-style distortion and an expanded frequency control range.
The Gonkulator's distinctive selling point is the DOD "grunge" distortion, designed to add clarity and address volume loss that can occur with tremolo-like resonance effects. The integrated distortion circuit can be fully turned off and bypassed, but experimenting with different levels can yield a wealth of new sounds. This pedal isn't just for guitarists; it can add a touch of the eccentric to bass, keys, synth, or even drums.

Need to tame it, or just let it be.
If you want to break the monotony in your effects chain and stand out through a unique sound this DOD Gonkulator Ring Mod pedal is for you. You should know the knobs are very sensitive to adjustment, a little twist and everything is transformed. I personally like "out-of-orbit" effects that span many dimensions in the hearing range, and this DOD Gonkulator Ring Mod stopbox is one of those "out-of-the-box" effects that needs to be tamed, or it is just enough to just let it be. Taking into account that the purpose of this pedal is to transform the timbre, we can conclude that the sound quality is good. However, handling the controls is a bummer, you can easily and very quickly fall into the realm of chaos where there will be a lot of hiss, noise, out of tune, bell sounds, telephone ring, synth beep, detune, doubling notes, blur sounds, kind of shimer and squealing, strident and sharp. Warning: This effect can sound like a lot of things are broken at the same time. I think really like it that way. So if you are one of those who like a purist and classic sound profile, stay far away from this stompbox, otherwise, get one at your fingertips and you won't regret it. This DOD Gonkulator Ring Mod serves well as a Distortion, as a Signal Booster, and of course as a Ring Modulator. In any case, dont forget it's a Digital Sound, it is not Analog Sound. You must take into consideration that modulating the tone and modulating the ring are very different things, because modifying the tone affects the frequency between highs, medis and lows of your signal, and modifying the ring affects the essence / nature of the signal, and this pedal DOD Gonkulator Ring Mod is just what it does. One last observation: this stompbox has a huge volume range, be careful. Blending is the key.

Killer bees and deranged robot are here to mutilate your sound
Two effects in one pedal, cheap, pedalboard-friendly. But it's really hard to find a good use for ring mod even in the context of experimental music. Besides, when I use it with synth, there is a strange bleeding effect.

Luke Weiler has played a DOD Gonkulator Ring Modulator since early 2018. He has only used it live once and it didn’t quite fit the older repertoire live. He has used it on bass and guitar on some demos for the new album. Unsure if any will make it on the new album that have already been recorded. Luke was hoping to take a killer EBOW Solo with the GONK on the new album but the jury is out whether that will come to fruition in time for final mixing and mastering towards the end of the summer.
