AKG D202E ‘Sound Rocket’ (1967-1980s) An icon of 60s design by Ernst Graf. | Martin Mitchell's Microphones

wordpress.com

The AKG D202E is celebrated for its innovative design and impressive versatility, excelling particularly in miking toms and snare drums. With a stellar frequency response of 30Hz to 18kHz, this dynamic microphone rivals many condensers, making it a favorite among rock musicians of the 70s. Its off-axis response allows for freedom of movement during performances, but some may find it less suitable for modern vocal applications due to its specific tonal character. Overall, the D202E is a vintage gem that combines aesthetics with functionality, though it may not be the best fit for every contemporary recording situation.

Microfiles: Inside The "Sound Rocket" Equipped With A Unique Dual-Diaphragm Design - ProSoundWeb

prosoundweb.com

The AKG D202E microphone, affectionately dubbed the "Sound Rocket," showcases remarkable versatility with its innovative dual-diaphragm design, making it an excellent choice for orchestral and spoken word applications. With a flat, full-range pickup and minimal proximity effect, it can capture sound beautifully, though it may not be ideal for vocalists who work closely with the mic. While the rugged build and attractive aesthetics are definite pluses, potential issues arise when the rear ports are inadvertently covered, limiting low-frequency capture. Despite its age, this mic still holds its ground, making it a worthy addition to any serious audio engineer's arsenal.

Used for King’s vocals on Music, as reported and pictured on page 11 of the September/October 1971 issue of Recording Engineer / Producer.

On Carole’s vocal is an AKG 202 E. Although most of her vocals are done in their final version after the instrument tracks are down, some of the cuts on her last album were actually the vocals she sang to the band while doing the instrument tracks.
