E-Mu Vintage Keys (MT Apr 93)

muzines.co.uk

E-mu's Vintage Keys sound module brilliantly crams 20 years of classic keyboards into a compact unit, offering a robust selection of sampled sounds from iconic instruments like the Minimoog and Mellotron. While its polyphony can be limiting, and some samples loop too quickly, the organ sounds are exceptional, and the digital filters allow for dynamic sound shaping. Despite the absence of onboard effects, Vintage Keys excels in versatility and practicality, making it a must-have for studios and live performances. Its affordability and reliability position it as an indispensable tool for musicians seeking vintage tones without the hassle of maintaining original gear.

Emu Vintage Keys (SOS Apr 93)

muzines.co.uk

The E-mu Vintage Keys synthesizer module offers a compelling throwback to classic keyboard sounds from the '70s and '80s, with a focus on authenticity and usability. It impressively captures the essence of iconic instruments like the Moog and Oberheim with high-quality samples and flexible modulation options. The module's design improvements, such as a more accessible front panel and resonant filters, enhance user experience and sound creation capabilities. However, it falls short with the absence of on-board effects and the notable omission of the DX7 Electric Piano in its basic version. Despite these drawbacks, the Vintage Keys remains a powerful tool for those seeking classic analog sounds without the exorbitant cost of vintage hardware.

The July 1994 issue of Sound On Sound has an interview with The Grid.

Despite an initial scepticism about Emu products, The Grid have recently added a Vintage Keys and a Procussion to the Proteus already in their setup. Norris: "The Vintage Keys bypass filtering appears quite a lot on the new album. I'm really into the 'sweeping' effects that you can create with it."
