Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Fender Cory Wong Signature Stratocaster.

Features and functionality

  • The Cory Wong Stratocaster features custom Seymour Duncan pickups, including a stacked single coil bridge pickup that reduces the "thinness" typical of some Strat sounds.

    Source
  • It includes a push-push knob acting as a "panic button" to instantly switch to the 4th pickup position, often used for funk strumming.

    Source
  • While the guitar should have a noiseless position 4, some users experience grounding hum, potentially due to cold solder joints or insufficient shielding.

    Source
  • The Cory Wong Stratocaster's pickguard isn't standard, with some screw holes moved, complicating swaps with aftermarket options.

    Source

Build quality

  • The guitar has a distinctive Sapphire Blue Transparent satin lacquer finish, which is rare since Fender usually offers polished finishes, making it unique among current models.

    Source
  • Some owners note the neck finish has a yellow tint, giving it a roasted appearance that may not suit everyone's taste.

    Source
  • It's noted that the guitar has an HSH pickup rout, which may allow for more versatile pickup configurations.

    Source

Comparisons

  • The Cory Wong model shares a lot with the American Ultra Strat, including the neck and body contours, but features a smaller overall body for a different feel.

    Source
  • Users suggest considering the American Professional II or Performer series for those seeking traditional Strat setups, as they offer simpler electronics and traditional finishes.

    Source
  • Some owners compare the Cory Wong Strat's construction favorably against the 2002 Fender Highway One, highlighting its superior build quality.

    Source

User experience

  • Owners mention the neck's comfort, highlighting rolled fingerboard edges that enhance playability, similar to the Pro II model.

    Source
  • Some users have tried replacing the pickguard, only to discover misalignment issues, highlighting the need for precise measurements when considering modifications.

    Source

Setup and maintenance

  • Initial intonation and tuning stability issues may stem from a narrow nut slot and require adjustments to the nut and truss rod.

    Source
  • Fender's vintage-style whammy bar system might require attention if the tremolo block is stiff, suggesting potential setup adjustments or spring modifications.

    Source

Value and pricing

  • Owners find significant value at $1300, noting that building a similar guitar from parts would cost around $1500.

    Source

Mods and upgrades

  • Owners attempting pickguard swaps often find that aftermarket 11-hole guards do not align correctly due to the guitar's unique dimensions.

Review: Fender Cory Wong Stratocaster - Mixdown Magazine

Fender's Cory Wong Signature Stratocaster is a stunning tribute to modern guitar playing, seamlessly blending innovative design with classic Stratocaster charm. Its comfortable, compound radius neck and articulate Clean Machine pickups enhance playability and tone, making it perfect for funk and beyond. However, the subtle body size reduction might not resonate with traditionalists. While it may initially appear standard, it offers a unique sonic palette that pushes creative boundaries. Ultimately, this guitar is a reimagined classic that inspires players to explore their musical limits.

Lizzy can be seen using this guitar at 1:03 in this video. You can tell that it's either a Cory Wong Signature Stratocaster or a Highway One Stratocaster, based on the Sapphire Blue color, 22 frets, two string trees, and truss rod at the headstock. However, it has a pearloid pickguard (Cory's has that stock), seems slightly smaller (one feature of his signature), and looks brand new (the Highway One was dicontinued in 2011, so it's likely it's a new guitar, not a Highway One).
