1996 Anniversary Bargain: A Solid 90s Modding Platform and the Ancestor to Modern Squier Sonics

Don't let the 'Made in China' stamp or the 1996 Fender 50th Anniversary sticker fool you; this wasn't a limited custom shop run, but rather the 90s direct precursor to today’s Squier Sonic and entry-level Affinity series.

Purchased on the used market for a bargain (~$100 USD), the guitar surprisingly holds its ground where it counts: the wood and playability. The maple neck felt remarkably solid, well-shaped, and offered a surprisingly comfortable vintage-style feel. Hardware-wise, it features the classic covered trapezoid/rhombus tuners, which, despite their cheap reputation, actually kept tuning surprisingly stable for everyday playing.

The weak link, as expected for this era, lies in the electronics. The stock ceramic pickups are quite flat, sterile, and 'meh' in terms of dynamic response. However, as a resonant, low-cost platform for future mods, it delivers 100% on its promise. While a modern Indonesian Affinity (like the 2011 models) beats it in fret finishing and factory hardware, this 1996 Squier remains an underrated budget workhorse with real 90s nostalgia.

It´s a good guitar

It´s a good guitar, but I personally don´t like the neck... It´s toooooo round to my hands, so I feel a little difficult to play. But other than that... It´s a very cool guitar!

Nice "Garage-found"

I got it from eBay, for 80 bucks with a boss Pedal, but it plays like a 800 dollar guitar. Absolutely gorgeous, I brought it to do mods on it and now I only want to experiment with the pickups and poti's a bit. Maybe I'm lucky, but mine plays just perfect for me.
