Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Fostex 350.

Features and functionality

  • The Fostex 350 has all mono channels and uses PCB opamp-based pre-amps, known to be less celebrated when new, but appreciated for their vintage character today.

    Source
  • Includes a meter bridge, a feature significant in tracking down parts for restoration. Original meter bridge knobs might need 3D printing due to scarcity.

    Source

Setup and maintenance

  • Regular use of contact cleaner is recommended for maintaining pot functionality and reducing crackling on older units like the Fostex 350.

    Source
  • Ensuring everything connected to the mixer is grounded and unused channels are zeroed can help minimize noise and feedback issues.

    Source

Mods and upgrades

  • Some owners suggest replacing capacitors in the power supply to reduce hum and noise levels, though this requires a level of technical expertise.

    Source

User experience

  • The EQs on the Fostex 350 are described as "crunchy," offering a unique character when driven hard, appealing to those seeking a vintage sound.

    Source
  • Enthusiasts highlight the appeal of using older, larger analog mixers for their low noise and unique overdriven sound character, though space can be a constraint.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • Some users integrate the Fostex 350 with a Yamaha Motif, Omnichord, and Boss DR-110/DR-55 for expanded channel capacity and submixing capabilities.

    Source

Comparisons

  • Owners often compare large analog desks like the Fostex 350 to rack line mixers for their expanded I/O and routing potential, despite the latter's smaller footprint.

Fostex 350 Mixer (EMM Apr 82)

muzines.co.uk

The Fostex 350 Mixer offers impressive versatility for its size and price, making it ideal for small studio setups. Its compact design, low noise operation, and flexible routing options are standout features. Though accessing rear connections can be cumbersome once the optional meter bridge is attached, the unit's overall functionality outweighs these minor inconveniences. While the EQ section takes some getting used to, it ultimately provides excellent tonal control. The build quality is robust despite a somewhat plastic feel, ensuring durability. Lacking some features like a built-in oscillator, the 350 still manages to deliver exceptional performance, making it a highly recommended choice for maintaining off-tape quality.

C: "...like a cassette radio, and it had a little drum machine in it with different rhythms. And you could record two tracks on it. A great idea, but they didn't market them right.

"I had that for a while, then it broke and I got a Portastudio — the one that records on all four tracks at once — which was really useful. I had that for a long time, until we did a deal with Fostex, and I got an eight-track. I have been thinking of getting a 16-track... I think that whatever you pay for it, if you write a song you can use on it, and it earns you enough money to pay for the machine, then it's worth it.

"I've got a little mixing desk..."

W: "He's got a Fostex 350."

"But for the drummer it started a fascination. Next came a Portastudio which Suggsy had "forgot" about and left hanging around the office. Woody liberated that for a while and found it just right for learning more about process and terms. Then the big one: he lashed out on his current Fostex A8 8-track recorder, and a Fostex 350 mixer (only very recently updated by a bigger Soundtracs 16/8/16 desk), plus an ever-increasing pile of outboard gadgetry."
