Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Gakken SX-150 Mark II Analog Synthesizer.

Build quality

  • The knobs can be fragile and may break off the circuit board if turned with excessive force.

    Source
  • The back panel is often just cardboard, which some users find suboptimal, leading to durability concerns over time.

    Source

Features and functionality

  • Includes two LFO wave shapes, pitch envelope, LFO rate and depth, cutoff, and resonance, with button triggers for filter and LFO depth sweeps.

    Source
  • The EXT. SOURCE input may require a voltage controller to function properly, as direct input often yields no response.

    Source
  • The SX-150's stylus and pad input limits its usability; users find it more effective as a noise maker without external control.

    Source
  • The instrument lacks a MIDI input, making traditional external control challenging without modifications.

    Source

Comparisons

  • Compared to the Monotron, the SX-150 Mark II offers more features and greater modding potential for a similar price.

    Source
  • Similar to the Monotron, the SX-150's pitch control is described as finicky but not impossible, offering unique sound possibilities.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • It excels in providing unique sounds for experimentation, but may not serve as the primary lead or bass instrument in every track.

    Source
  • The synthesizer is ideal for creating soundscapes with intertwining harmonics, especially when run through delay effects.

    Source

Mods and upgrades

  • Owners have modded the SX-150 Mark II with a MIDI control kit from beatnic.jp, though tuning accuracy beyond an octave can be an issue.

    Source
  • One user attempted to control the SX-150 externally by connecting the stylus to various CV outputs, but encountered issues without a trigger or gate signal.

    Source
  • Users recommend considering a MIDI to CV converter for better external control, as direct CV inputs from other synths may not function effectively.

    Source

User experience

  • Playing the SX-150 is likened to a theremin in terms of skill required, due to the difficulty of keeping the stylus on the ribbon track.

    Source

Software and compatibility

  • The Behringer CAT's MIDI to CV capability was tested but failed to trigger the SX-150, suggesting potential compatibility issues.

Cute and simple

The SX150 doesn't do too much sonically except make rough squeeky and bleepy tones , but when you circuit bend it to have CV-in functionality it opens a whole world for cool experimental compositions especially when using its dirty analog filter . In its un-modified state Its definitely a great synth for beginners or people who are just starting to get into synthesis or even those who just like to tinker with things that make weird sounds

Preferred Settings + Usage:

control voltage modification (3.5mm jack) for pitch sequencing

Gakken SX-150 Mark II Analog Synthesizer

First time when I saw one of these little machines was in Jonny Greenwoods photo. From then I've been wondering about it.Finally I ordered one from amazon.I believe this one is better then first version. It comes completed and works fine.I'm not pretty sure about making music with this little analog synthesizer but it is a fun toy.If you use it with some looper you might get nice tunes I guess.
