Ask Amp Man: Taming a Hiwatt DR-201 - Premier Guitar

premierguitar.com

While the Hiwatt Custom 200 Bass Amp DR201 delivers a powerful, full-frequency sound akin to a grand piano, its overwhelming volume can be a significant drawback for many users. The review highlights the amp's impressive tonal capabilities but warns against modifications like tube removal, which could lead to dangerous voltage issues. Additionally, the complexity of the amp's design may pose setup challenges, especially for those who are not experienced with amp modifications. Overall, while it boasts excellent sound quality, the daunting power and potential risks may deter less experienced players.

"It (the ES-335)’s had many different amp partners. A Vox AC 30 ‘top boost’ in the studio for several years, again through the Normal channel, a Marshall 100 watt and 50-watt, two High Watt stacks (see the 1970 Isle of White DVD when it eventually comes out). The DVD sounds great by the way. A Marshall fuzz unit that I used on recordings through the 70’s and 80’s, and at other times with just a small standard compressor (that’s all there is on my 335 for the Blue Guitar solo sound at the start of the record, that’s how good an recording engineer Eric Stewart was), an Eventide Harmoniser, and lately a Mesa Boogie, a Matchless 30 and a Fender Custom 30 watt, as well as my old Marshall 50."

At around 2:45, you get a really good look at one the 200 watt heads through 2 4x10 cabinets. He also uses either a 50 or 100 watt head as back up through either a 1x12 or 2x10. He also switches out the 4x10s, for an 8x10 or a 4x10/1x15 combo cab.

For the album Mania:

"Matt- What equipment do you guys use?

Ozo - On this recording I used my Hiwatt 200W amp along with my Hi-watt cab 4*10+1*15. That's absolutely the best rig I ever tried. For the distortion I use mostly a modified Ibanez Tubescreamer. Also for recording we have plenty of cool michrophones and tubepreamps that we use. Used my Gibson thunderbird"
