Love Marantz
This guy is fantastic. There are better tape decks out there and that's fine. I use this as a signal processor. I'll hit a track or a few tracks or even a whole mix if I wanna get wacky. Simple stereo cassette used as a signal processor seems over looked among those I've talked to- might just not know of those who do more of this. So fun on drums. Hard wired in standard in my work flow.

no matter how good the deck, cassettes usually shave most of the info above like 12k, right? lower on transients if you record hot for good signal to noise

Yeah, you're really not gonna get anything over 12k. Makes for some really cool processing on cymbals in a room mic. I usually will blend the room mic w/ a slammed to cassette room mic like you would w/ a parallel compression set up. I have done more extreme stuff ala The Microphones / Phil Elverum but there's lots of fun uses that aren't as extreme / colored. Fun to tuck it in -in subtle ways across a mix, tho room mic & vocals or backing Vox is most common. Often for composition reasons-like on a bridge to render a bit more distinctive shift in the over all timbre of that section or on a chorus to add a feeling of intensity.

I forgot to mention toying with different tape formulas, Dolby, etc. & also I've used endless cassettes over & over till they're just trashed as well. Anyone looking for a good deck 1990-1995 are good years, go with a single cassette deck, avoid auto reverse (it'll fuck up the head alignment), & make sure you can switch tape formulas.
