It is for style

The vintage look is very nice. However, it is quite heavy for a microphone.

Shure SH55 Serie II review

If you need a great concert mic just buy a SH55, it's a classic one, a real deal.

Cool retro look!

I own both models of 55 mic from shure, the original with the switch and the upgrade with blue foam filter. To my ears, the original is warmer but can be harder to get on top of a monitor mix as a lead vocalist without low end feedback. I really like it for micing combos, especially tweeds.
