Comparisons

  • The sE Electronics V7, especially the MK version, offers superior sound quality compared to both the SM58 and PGA58 at a similar price point.

    Source
  • The sE Electronics V2 is noted to outperform the SM58 in sound quality, despite its lower price of $50.

    Source
  • The Beta58A offers better off-axis rejection due to its supercardioid pattern, reducing feedback in well-placed setups compared to the cardioid SM58.

    Source
  • The Sennheiser E935 is often preferred over the SM58 and Beta58A by touring acts for its performance, with a similar price range to the Beta58A.

    Source

User experience

  • The SM58 is favored for its reliability and universal presence in studios and live stages, making it easy to achieve a good sound due to widespread familiarity.

Setup and maintenance

  • Using an XLR to XLR cable is critical for proper signal capture; XLR to 1/4" connections can result in inadequate gain and altered frequency response.

Features and functionality

  • The PGA58 includes an XLR to 1/4" cable, but this setup can limit the microphone's performance, suggesting a true XLR connection is preferable for optimal use.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • The Beta58A may be more prone to feedback with inexperienced engineers, potentially making the SM58 a safer choice for club gigs.

Shure PGA58 Dynamic Mic Review / Test — Geeks Rising

geeksrising.com

The Shure PGA58 is a budget-friendly alternative to the SM58, ideal for vocal performances with a decent build quality and practical on/off switch. While it excels in live vocal settings with its noise rejection and flatter response, it falls short for instrument recording, often sounding muddy on bass-heavy sources. Its off-axis coloration can result in a mid-forward sound, making it less versatile than its pricier counterparts. A solid choice for those focused on vocals, podcasting, or gaming commentary, but not the best for multi-instrumentalists seeking rich, nuanced sound.

Like an SM58, but cheaper

Pretty much the same dynamic mic experience as the popular SM58 as far as I can tell. But, half the price. Kind of like a Made in Mexico Fender. Get a good sound and save some cash.
