Description
The Supro Ozark is a modernized version of the late-50’s Supro guitar played by Jimi Hendrix and Joe Perry.
Historically accurate body dimensions and 25" scale length—as well as the signature pinstripe line art from the original instrument— have all been meticulously recreated in this limited-edition Ozark for 2019.
Given the opportunity to re-imagine the Supro Ozark, we have taken a number of steps to improve the playability and intonation of the original design while still capturing the sound of this classic American guitar.
A string-through-body hardtail bridge is mounted directly to the steel control plate, allowing individual intonation of each string while delivering the robust sustain of the original instrument.
Featuring a black satin-finished maple neck that is glued into a mahogany body at the 14th fret, preserving the geometry of this iconic guitar while vastly improving its playability and tuning stability.
A custom-made Aluma 90 pickup developed for Supro by Lace Music captures the tonal splendor of the original Valco lap steel

According to this article from Music Radar "Jimi’s first electric was a 1957 Supro Ozark 1560S, bought for $89 from Myers Music Store in Seattle. The guitar got a run-out in The Rocking Kings, before being pinched from The Birdland Club in 1960. If it ever surfaces at auction, expect a stampede of hedge-fund managers."
Joe Perry uses a Supro Ozark in the music video for Shakin' My Cage. He also uses this guitar on Monkey on my Back.
An interview with Perry done in 2004:
Well, that’s the Ozark, because it’s kind of a beginner’s guitar, so it’s got a fat neck on it. I doubt it’s even got a truss rod in it. In fact there’s a picture of Hendrix — I think it was the first guitar Hendrix’s father bought for him, back in the — if you look at some really early, early pictures of Jimi, he’s playing one. It’s got one of those kind of horseshoe pickups on it, and the neck is kind of flat. So it really lends itself to playing slide. So I just raised the action a little bit, and I’ve used it on a bunch of songs. The most notable would be “Monkey on My Back,” that little guitar riff. And that’s what I use when I play it live.
My first guitar was a Sears Roebuck Silvertone, with the single lipstick-tube pickup – you know, a Danelectro – and I bought a cheap Supro with one bridge pickup. I believe the model was later called an Ozark – kind of a small-scale thing. Eventually I had the Res-O-Glas Supro, made out of fiberglass – white, with two pickups and some kind of bridge pickup.
In a Premier Guitar Rig Rundown video, Jamie Hince shares how he initially laughed at the appearance of the Supro Ozark 1560S Electric Guitar but quickly grew fond of its sound.
In a 1974 photograph, Chris Stein is seen using a Supro Ozark 1560S Electric Guitar, identifiable by its distinctive body shape and 24.75-inch scale length.
