Features and functionality

    Source
  • Users can dynamically transpose keys and chords, and the accompaniment will adapt, enhancing live jam session versatility.

    Source
  • The QY100's linear sequencer involves extensive menu navigation and shift buttons, less suited for real-time use but effective as a compact sketchpad.

    Source
  • The QY100 has hidden features in its code, which can be unlocked and used via .Q1P files, expanding its capabilities beyond many modern sequencers.

    Source
  • The QY100 can extend its pattern length from the default 8 bars to 32 bars, overcoming a significant limitation of the original design.

    Source
  • The QY100 has the ability to rearrange notes to fit 312 default chord structures, but potentially hundreds more are hidden within its memory.

    Source

User experience

    Source
  • Users report held notes at the end of the final measure get cut off when a song loops, a minor issue mitigated by using longer measures.

    Source

Comparisons

    Source
  • The QY100, along with the QY700 and RM1X, was among the last standalone sequencers attempting to rival DAWs, a now largely obsolete category.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • The QY100 serves as a comprehensive tool for building complex 16-track compositions with a MIDI controller like a keytar.

    Source
  • The inability to mute tracks live easily is a noted drawback for jamming, unlike the QY10 which offered this feature.

    Source
  • The overdub recording mode allows for continuous recording on a single track while pattern mode loops, though navigating to other tracks requires stopping the recording.

    Source

Software and compatibility

  • Unlocking the hidden features requires a Smart Media card and USB card reader, utilizing .Q1P files for code injection.

Critic Reviews

SMALL IS BEAUTIFUL

soundonsound.com

The Yamaha QY100 Music Sequencer is a portable powerhouse, perfect for musicians on the go, offering a comprehensive feature set including a 16-track sequencer and XG sound chip. It shines with its extensive MIDI capabilities and editable sound options. However, the complexity of its features can make it slightly fiddly, and the editing of amp setups is limited. Despite these minor drawbacks, it excels as a versatile tool for songwriting and live performance, making it a valuable asset in both practice and studio settings.

And then I use just a little Yamaha QY100 for the drums.

It’s funny because for some reason I like the drums in the QY100 better than a lot of sample drums I’ve heard. They’re nice and punchy, and they sound pretty good. The drum sounds in this QY100 -- I’ve been using them for a long time, and I haven’t found anything I liked better. Samples take time to load and all that stuff, and you know, this is easy.

Per his April 14, 2014 interview with xlr8r:

The Yamaha sequencers have been a mainstay in my arsenal. I started off with the portable QY100, and I remember programming tracks from X-101 on that pocket sequencer. Of course, I’ve used other hardware sequencers, but through the years, Yamaha’s QY700 series has been sort of my weapon of choice.
