Guitar & Bass Article: Soundcheck Marshall 4x12 cabinets – SoloDallas LLC

solodallas.com

The 1969 Marshall "Basketweave" 4x12 Cabinet is hailed as a legendary piece of gear, revered for its open high-frequency spectrum and dynamic range, making it a favorite among rock icons like Jeff Beck and Johnny Winter. Its 25-watt speakers deliver a fuller and wider tone compared to earlier models, embodying the quintessential Marshall sound. However, it may not suit everyone, especially those who prefer a more modern, less vintage sound profile. Despite the nostalgia and tonal richness, some might find the newer, handwired Marshall cabinets more practical, offering a balanced "best of all worlds" tone without the wear of vintage speakers.

What was your main guitar setup on the new record? —Anders Roil

The new record is pretty specific. The brass tacks in the amplification for the heavy stuff was a Bugera 1960, which is basically a plexi clone, into a Marshall basketweave cab with 30-watt Greenbacks.

Tom states he uses "one Marshall, in particular, that I love. It’s an old Super Lead, and it has a really old cabinet that, I think, has 20-watt Greenbacks, and it has that solid old brown grillecloth"

JD explains that he uses an old '69 Basketweave Marshall 4x12 Cab, with 2 Celestion Greenback speakers, and two Weber CV-123 (Cerwin Vega copy) speakers. He got "turned on" to the Cerwin Vega's because that's what he heard Duane Allman used in his cabs
